UPM Biofuels receives Uruguay’s first RSB sustainability certification for biofuel feedstock

UPM Biofuels has received a sustainability certificate for the cultivation of the Brassica carinata crop – a new feedstock for biofuel production – in Uruguay. The RSB (The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials) certification in biofuel feedstock production complements UPM Biofuels’ existing sustainability certifications like ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) and RSB certifications for its UPM BioVerno biofuel production.

“RSB certification acknowledges our strong commitment to sustainability in all operations, now also in biofuel feedstock production with local farmers. This is also the first RSB certificate in Uruguay and creates new sustainable practices for agriculture,” says Liisa Ranta, Manager, Sustainability, UPM Biofuels Development.

RSB is one of the European Commission’s approved voluntary schemes, which can be used to show compliance with the EU Renewable Energy Directive’s sustainability criteria. In addition to EU RED criteria, the sustainability of biofuels is evaluated against 12 principles which have been approved by a wide variety of stakeholders, including NGOs and UN agencies. In addition to greenhouse gas savings compared to fossil fuels, RSB principles cover biodiversity, human rights and environmental and social responsibility throughout the value chain.

Brassica carinata is an oilseed crop specially designed for sustainable production of biofuels. UPM Biofuels has been developing and testing a new type of biofuel feedstock concept by growing Brassica carinata as a secondary crop in South America. The crop works well in the climatic and agricultural conditions of Uruguay and has been tested by local farmers. Brassica carinata cultivation adds value to their use of existing agricultural land as it will be used productively also in winter.

Stora Enso has started a feasibility study at its paper production site in Langerbrugge, Belgium, for the conversion of one of the two paper lines into a high-volume recycled containerboard line. Mondi expands release liner range with launch of two new paper-based sustainable EverLiner products

Leading global packaging and paper group Mondi is launching a range of new paper-based release liners which are created using recycled and light-weight materials and provide a more sustainable solution for a range of applications. The new products have been created with FSC®1 or PEFC® certified paper to ensure responsible sourcing and, being lighter in weight, they offer a sustainable solution for labels, tapes, envelopes and industrial usage. EverLiner labelite is a lighter option to standard glassine for label applications, with the same thickness of 58 gsm glassine but engineered to a reduced weight of 47 gsm. This results in 20% less raw material used to produce the liner. EverLiner M R is the first release liner on the market using a recycled base paper. The machine glazed paper (MG) with 70% FSC® recycled certified content reduces the amount of fresh fibres used and is FSC® certified so ensures responsible sourcing.

Mactac Announces Thinner, More Sustainable Thermal Transfer Labeling Solutions

Mactac® Roll Label announces the addition of thinner, more sustainable thermal transfer labeling solutions to its Optiscan® product line-up. The two new products feature facestocks that are 14 percent thinner caliper than current products and Mactac’s recently launched ultra-thin 1.7-mil BLOOM® hi.mpact™ glassine paper liner. Optiscan K features a coated thermal transfer facestock that is 14 percent thinner caliper than current products and uses less paper/coating at only 34 lb. basis weight. Optiscan V has an uncoated, super smooth vellum thermal transfer facestock that is 14 percent thinner caliper than most current products.
