2017 Atlantic Teacher’s Tour

This August, J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) volunteered to host a visit to our operations as part of the Atlantic Canadian Teachers’ Tour, held in Truro, Nova Scotia. Educators from all over the Atlantic Provinces gathered to learn more about the forestry industry and how it impacts our region. The three-day tour involved tours of local mills, private woodlot owners land and JDI freehold land, pre-commercial thinning and commercial thinning.

“I didn’t know really anything about the forestry industry before now, but I now know there are things in place to make sure what’s being done is being done in a responsible fashion. They’re making sure it’s a positive thing for the environment” says Tammy Manor, a grade three teacher from Torbay, Newfoundland.

This annual tour, coordinated by the Canadian Woodlands Forum, is designed not only to inform teachers of the environmental stewardship of the forestry industry, but to open a door of career options that they can take back to students. JDI plans 80 years ahead while growing a sustainable forest.

JDI plans to hire 8600 people between 2017-2019.
