Members of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) recently judged Sappi’s Algro Guard OHG barrier packaging paper a winner in the food category of the distinguished WorldStar 2017 Awards. Representatives from Sappi’s Functional Papers product group will accept the award during the prestigious WorldStar Awards Presentations and Gala Dinner to be held in Dusseldorf at Interpack 2017. The WorldStar Competition is one of the major events conducted by the World Packaging Organisation and is the preeminent international award in the packaging industry. WorldStar celebrates the continual advancement of packaging design and technology and creates a standard for international packaging excellence. Highlights for the fourth quarter: • Ended 2016 with $75.4 million of cash and cash equivalents as well as $11.8 million of restricted cash; Torstar has no bank indebtedness. • Our net income from continuing operations was $0.7 million ($0.01 per share) in the fourth quarter of 2016. This compares to a net loss of $233.4 million ($2.90 per share) in the fourth quarter of 2015. Our income in the fourth quarter of 2016 included $15.6 million of amortization and depreciation and $7.5 million of non-cash impairment charges. Our net loss in the fourth quarter of 2015 included $213.3 million of non-cash impairment charges and $37.2 million of amortization and depreciation. • Fourth quarter 2016 operating profit was $10.3 million, an improvement of $217.4 million from the fourth quarter of 2015. click Read More below for additional detail

Those of you who read The Daily Telegraph may have spotted a familiar name in the Letters to the Editor section on Saturday. Two Sides wrote to the Editor in response to a previous article in the paper about the BBC’s decision to replace paper scripts with digital scripts as part of their ‘green measures’. Here’s an extract from the original article that we, and many of our members and stakeholders, had a particular issue with; Shows such as Casualty have already halved the paper they use from scripts as part of their green measures, estimating they have saved the equivalent of 90 trees. Two Sides works hard to tackle misconceptions about the print and paper industry.
