Broadband providers in California will be prohibited from blocking or throttling traffic, charging higher fees for fast-lane service, and from exempting their own video streams from consumers' data caps, if a bill passed late last week is signed by Governor Jerry Brown. The law, SB 822, which restores the Obama-era open internet rules, passed 27-12 in the California Senate and 61-18 in the Assembly. State Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), who sponsored the bill, calls it "the strongest net neutrality protections in the country." Advocacy group Fight for the Future called the bill's passage "a major victory for Internet activists who harnessed massive public outcry to pass the bill and a resounding defeat for big telecom companies like AT&T and Comcast." A Senate hearing on a task force report recommending U.S. Postal Service reforms, scheduled for Sept. 5, has been postponed as President Donald Trump is delaying release of the report, according to Reuters. The report was delivered to President Trump on Aug. 10. He has been hypercritical of Amazon’s relationship with the USPS, claiming it has received favored treatment and exacerbated the postal service’s fiscal woes, leading to formation of the task force this past spring. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says his country will continue exporting crude oil despite U.S. efforts to stop it through sanctions. Speaking to a group of oil officials on Tuesday, Rouhani said the U.S. is targeting oil exports as part of efforts to reimpose sanctions on Iran. “We will continue by all means to both produce and export” oil, Rouhani said in remarks broadcast on state TV. “Oil is in the frontline of confrontation and resistance.” Click Read More below for additional information.
Just two months after announcing plans to replace its current, 71-year-old Green Bay Paper Mill, leaders from Green Bay Packaging Inc. formally broke ground on constructing the first new paper mill in the State of Wisconsin in over 30 years. Solenis has completed the acquisition of the pulp and paper chemical distribution business from Connell Bros. Co. (CBC) in Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam. All assets and business associated with the Solenis pulp and paper business represented by CBC in these countries are part of the deal, including inventory, accounts and field equipment.
