All green products start with a Greensource: climate neutrality with Europe’s forest fibre industry

UPM is one of the founding members of the #GreenSource initiative, to promote the role of forest-fibre industries in the effort to achieve the EU’s climate neutrality target by 2050. #GreenSource brings together members of EPIS, the European Pulp Industry Sector Association and Cepi, the Confederation of European Paper Industries.

The forest fibre industry wish to play a central role in offering solutions that responds to the needs of the European citizens and contribute to a sustainable lifestyle while making sure that forests keep growing, absorbing CO2 and protecting biodiversity.

A recent scientific study commissioned by Cepi on the Climate effect of the forest-based sector in the European Union shows that, thanks to the forests and forest-based products, 806 million tons of CO2 is taken out of the atmosphere every year – this corresponds to 20% of the EU’s annual emissions – while bringing 3.5 million jobs, especially to rural areas.

In times of COVID-19, it’s important to remember that the forest fibre industry is delivering packaging, tissue and hygiene products that are essential to EU citizens while being good for the planet and good for the European economy.

New bio-boiler plant improves energy efficiency at UPM Joensuu plywood mill

The new bio-boiler plant has been put into operation at UPM Joensuu Plywood Mill. It replaces the combined heat and power plant which was built in 1962. The modern bio-boiler plant not only improves the mill's energy efficiency but also environmental performance, occupational safety and fire safety. The boiler uses biofuel, i.e. by-products of plywood production, such as bark and wood chips. Thus, no additional trees are cut down to generate thermal energy. The combustion technology based on the grate technology is more efficient than the technology of the old power plant, which means lower fuel consumption per heat output and thus lower emissions.

This year’s planting season underway at SCA 43 million seedlings to be planted

SCA cooperates with approximately 25 contractors as part of the planting work. This in turn means almost 500 planters will be active in the forests, from Svappavaara in the north to Hassela in the south. The planters are from many different countries, including the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Romania, Ukraine and Nepal. They begin planting in mid-May and continue into October. The planters work both in SCA’s own forest and on the land of private forest owners, who have contracted SCA to help with planting. Before the planters leave for the forest, they must have successfully completed the Skötselskolan (Forest Management School) training course, which is a industry-wide online training course. Those working as planting supervisors, meaning people leading planting work in the forest, must also have completed a practical course covering consideration for nature conservation and cultural heritage. Responsible Wood welcomes Woolworths new Australian-made paper bag

Responsible Wood, our national member for Australia, has welcomed an announcement by Woolworths, one of the country’s main supermarkets, that it will be stocking PEFC-certified paper bags. The move comes ahead of a progressive roll-out of Australian-made paper bags over the next 12 months. Woolworths paper shopping bags were first launched in June 2020 in response to customer demand for a paper carry bag option. “Whilst almost all customers are now bringing their own reusable bags, we know unplanned shops will present a challenge from time to time,” said Natalie Davis, Managing Director of Woolworths Supermarkets. “Earlier this year we introduced the option of a paper bag, which can be recycled at home, and the feedback from customers has been positive.”
