American Forest & Paper Association Releases November 2017 Printing-Writing Paper Report

According to the November 2017 Printing-Writing Monthly report from the American Forest & Paper Association, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased six percent in November compared to November 2016. Shipments of uncoated free sheet shipments remained flat while the remaining three major printing-writing grades declined year-over-year. Total printing-writing paper inventory levels increased less than one-half of one percent from October 2017.
•November uncoated free sheet (UFS) paper shipments were flat year-over-year following year-over-year increases in two of the previous three months. Imports of UFS decreased by 30 percent year-over-year in October – the fifth consecutive monthly decrease, with imports down 12 percent year-to-date. Exports of UFS papers increased 30 percent year-over-year in October, following the 26 percent year-over-year increase in September, the sixth double-digit percent year-over-year increase in a row.
•Shipments of coated free sheet (CFS) paper in November declined by a double-digit percentage for the second consecutive month. U.S. imports of CFS papers decreased nine percent year-over-year in October, the fourth consecutive year-over-year decline. Exports of CFS papers increased six percent year-over-year in October – the fourth consecutive year-over-year monthly increase thus far in 2017.
•Coated mechanical (CM) paper shipments declined year-over-year in November for the sixth consecutive month. Imports of CM were essentially flat or just under one-half of one percent compared to October 2016. Exports of CM increased 14 percent in October to 33,000 tons and for the year sit three percent lower than year-to-date 2016.
•Exports of uncoated mechanical (UM) papers decreased 4% year-over-year in September, but reached second-highest level in the past 24 months. Overall shipments of UM have declined year-over-year for seventeen consecutive months. Imports of UM decreased 13% year-over-year in September.

Sappi Gratkorn’s next step to increase the share of renewable energy

As part of Sappi Europe's full scale decarbonisation roadmap, Gratkorn mill is expanding the share of biomass to be used as an energy source, further driving the move away from fossil fuels as part of the mill’s contribution to the European roadmap. The project follows the recent modernisation of the power plant boiler which enabled the shift from coal to a combined approach of biomass and natural gas. The mill is now embarking on a next step, enhancing its infrastructure and therefore capacity in order to handle the delivery, sorting and processing of increased biomass levels. This increased utilisation requires an improved biomass handling system at the mill as well as decentralised intermediate storage terminals within the surrounding regions.

Avery Dennison Announces First Quarter 2021 Results

First Quarter 2021 Results by Segment: Label and Graphic Materials - Reported sales increased 17.3% to $1.38 billion. Sales were up 8.4% ex. currency and 7.6% on an organic basis. Reported operating margin increased 170 basis points to 16.4%. Retail Branding and Information Solutions - Reported sales increased 20.1% to $483 million. Sales were up 15.0% ex. currency and 9.3% on an organic basis, reflecting strong growth in both the high value categories and the base business. Reported operating margin increased 470 basis points to 12.4%. Industrial and Healthcare Materials - Reported sales increased 29.8% to $192 million. Sales were up 18.8% ex. currency and 16.3% on an organic basis, reflecting an approximately 20% increase in industrial categories and a low-single digit decline in healthcare categories. Reported operating margin increased 220 basis points to 12.3%.
