American Forest & Paper Association Releases November 2020 Printing-Writing Monthly Report

According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 24 percent in November compared to November 2019. U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers decreased 16 percent in November compared to the same month last year. Total printing-writing paper inventory levels increased one percent when compared to October 2020.

Uncoated free sheet (UFS) paper shipments decreased 17 percent compared to November 2019 while the inventory level increased one percent compared to October 2020. UFS imports and exports both decreased compared to October 2019, down 12 percent and 40 percent, respectively.

U.S. purchases of coated free sheet (CFS) papers in November decreased 23 percent compared to last November while the inventory level increased three percent compared to October 2020. CFS imports and exports both decreased compared to October 2019, down 42 percent and 18 percent, respectively.

Coated mechanical (CM) paper shipments decreased 37 percent compared to November 2019 while the inventory level decreased three percent compared to October 2020. CM imports and exports both decreased compared to October 2019, down 35 percent and 43 percent, respectively.

U.S. purchases of uncoated mechanical (UM) papers in November decreased 13 percent compared to last November while the inventory level increased two percent compared to October 2020. UM imports and exports both decreased compared to October 2019, down 14 percent and 44 percent, respectively.

Norske Skog: Continued growth in challenging containerboard markets

Norske Skog’s EBITDA in the third quarter of 2023 was NOK 327 million, a decrease from NOK 380 million in the second quarter of 2023. The main driver for the lower third quarter EBITDA was lower publication paper sales prices. The cash flow from operations in the quarter was NOK 173 million. Deliveries of packaging paper increased according to ramp-up plans, and Norske Skog Bruck received favourable quality feedback from customers. The Norwegian government proposed to increase the quota price floor for receiving CO2-compensation. “We are very pleased by the positive feedback from our containerboard customers, and that we are well underway to become one of the leading independent supplier of recycled containerboard in Europe. At the same time, we are maneuvering our mills to be as cost effective as possible. Cash flow from operations was NOK 173 million in the quarter compared to NOK 353 million in the previous quarter, mainly due to lower EBITDA, receivable insurance compensation, and increased working capital. Operating earnings in the third quarter of 2023 were NOK 36 million compared to operating earnings in the second quarter of 2023 of NOK 146 million.

Per Ivar Berg becomes new Managing Director at Norske Skog Saugbrugs

Per Ivar Berg (58) has been appointed new Managing Director at Norske Skog Saugbrugs AS from February 1, 2022. He has extensive experience from a number of positions in the pulp and paper industry, in addition to food industry. Until recently, he was the Executive Vice President at TINE with responsibility for production, investments, contingency planning, product development and R&D. He has previously been Managing Director at the Norske Skog mills Follum and Parenco as well as production- and maintenance manager at Saugbrugs from 1997 to 2001. Berg graduated in 1987 with a master degree in chemical engineering at NTNU in Trondheim. "We are very pleased to welcome Per Ivar Berg as the new Managing Director at Norske Skog Saugbrugs. Together, we share the ambition to create as competitive Norske Skog Saugbrugs as possible in this demanding industry. Today, Saugbrugs is well-run mill with great potential for further development, especially within new fibre products. The agreement to sell three of Sappi’s European graphic paper mills to the Aurelius Group lapses

Sappi Limited announced today that the intended sale to Aurelius Group of its Maastricht Mill in the Netherlands, its Stockstadt Mill in Germany and its Kirkniemi Mill in Finland (the “Transaction”) has not materialised within the agreed timeframe of the contractual agreement and therefore the agreement has lapsed. The mills included: Sappi Maastricht Mill produces 260,000 ton per annum (tpa) of coated woodfree paper and paperboard mainly sold to printers and packaging converters globally. Sappi Stockstadt Mill is an integrated pulp and paper mill located in Germany, producing 145,000 tpa of pulp which is used to produce 220,000 tpa of coated and uncoated woodfree paper mainly sold into the European print market. Sappi Kirkniemi Mill is an integrated pulp and paper mill located in Finland, producing 300,000 tpa of bleached mechanical pulp which is used to produce approximately 750 000 tpa of a variety of coated mechanical paper grades used in the print publication industry globally.
