Climate Data from the Baltic Sea

While the Stora Enso vessel TransPaper travels between Northern Finland and Continental Europe carrying board and paper to our customers, it is also helping researchers gather climate data from what is one of the world’s most sensitive waters, the brackish Baltic Sea.

The boat is equipped with an automated device collecting air and water samples at regular intervals for environmental research. It measures, for instance, salinity, chlorophyll, alkalinity, phosphate/nitrate levels, and the concentration of cyanobacterias. In addition, measurement of the sea surface temperature is used for modeling ice coverage in Bothnian Bay.

The sampling is organised by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE). Measuring the conditions of the sea 3-4 metres below the surface, water samples are automatically collected at 15 locations along the vessel’s weekly route.

JDI Forester Finds Rare Plant Population in New Brunswick

Forester Grant Steeves of the JDI Sussex Woodlands office has discovered a rare plant population on JDI-managed Crown Land near Havelock, New Brunswick. During his survey walk of a forest block last fall, Steeves noticed a low-ground plant with unique broad white stripes on its leaves. Having had rare plant identification training, Steeves was aware that this could be quite a find. Steeves took a photo of the plant and sent it to JDI Naturalist Kelly Honeyman, who then visited the site to confirm the rarity: a Downy Rattlesnake Plantain - classified as an S-1 plant (with five or less known populations in New Brunswick) - the rarest in the rare plant ranking system.

Focus Report Required from Northern Pulp

Environment Minister Margaret Miller released her decision today, March 29, on the environmental assessment of Northern Pulp’s proposed effluent treatment plant. The minister’s decision is to require the company to submit a focus report that provides more information. “We make our decisions based on science and evidence” said Ms. Miller. “In this case, I require more information to determine the impacts on the environment.” Through the environmental assessment process, the department received comments from government reviewers and more than 900 submissions from the public. By April 24, the department will give Northern Pulp terms of reference for the focus report and post them on the department website. New 74% paper recycling target set for 2020

The European paper recycling value chain has already made significant strides on the paper recycling rate in the EU having reached a near theoretical maximum of 71.5% in 2015. The industry is now seeking to make another move forward with an enhanced rate of 74% by 2020 building on the progress achieved since 2000 by preceding European Declarations on Paper Recycling. Recycling Target“Having already achieved an effective recycling rate of 71.5%, the European paper recycling value chain is willing to go a step further with a new 74% target. This elevated rate will play an integral role in boosting the circularity of Europe’s economy” says Ulrich Leberle, Secretary of the EPRC/Raw Materials Director at CEPI.
