Electric power for all: Heidelberg offers high-performance Wallbox for electric cars

Electric mobility is gaining ground worldwide, and its importance will continue to grow at a fast pace in the coming years. One of the biggest challenges in this is the rapid expansion of the charging infrastructure: today in Germany, for example, there are just 25,000 public charging points (source: statista.de, May 2017). However, around five times as many would be needed for the planned number of one million electric cars by the year 2020. It is therefore clear that there is a huge need for an extensive network of publicly available and private charging stations with the appropriate charging capacity.

“We’re confident that we’re at a turning point when it comes to electric mobility,” says Rainer Hundsdörfer, CEO of Heidelberg. “Electric cars are becoming a real option for more and more drivers. We want to take advantage of this trend, and put our expertise to work to benefit from this growth market.”

With its new Wallbox, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) has therefore developed a charging device up to 22 kW that offers an impressive combination of high performance and quality and very good value for money. “Whoever wants it, can now simply use it! Heidelberg is making the charging station mainstream for all electric cars, and by so doing laying the ground for a breakthrough in electric mobility. Whether for the garage at home, the parking space in front of the supermarket, or in the city center, the Wallbox offers tailored electronics,” says Stephan Plenz, Member of the Management Board responsible for Technology at Heidelberg.

The product is based on the company’s extensive know-how in the area of power electronics and has already proven successful on the market with around 20,000 Wallboxes for electric cars from a premium manufacturer and over 100,000 intelligent charging cables manufactured on a customer’s behalf. Now Heidelberg is showcasing a proprietary high-performance Wallbox as a world premiere at the Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exhibition (EVS30, www.messe-stuttgart.de/evs30), taking place from 9 to 11 October 2017 in Stuttgart. The trade fair is the world’s biggest industry event for electric mobility.

“We’ve invested hugely in the area of electric mobility in recent years. With the Wallbox, we’re now offering commercial and private customers an entry-level model that is leading the way in terms of functionality and value for money,” says Plenz. But that is just the beginning. Heidelberg is planning to gradually establish a comprehensive portfolio for the entire charging infrastructure. To start, the entry-level model will be enhanced to produce a premium model with comprehensive functionality. “To this end we’re open to partnerships with energy suppliers and local authorities that want to work with us to design the future of electric mobility.”
