Graphic Packaging International Inc. will close its paper converting plant at 160 Washington St. by the end of the year, laying off 228 employees. Workers were told Monday that layoffs will be done in phases starting in a little more than 60 days. “We made the decision to close the facility based on the capabilities of the plant and its supply chain infrastructure. It didn’t fit into our portfolio anymore,” said Sue Appleyard, senior manager of corporate communications in the company’s Atlanta office. “We have acquired other facilities recently that have state-of-the-art capabilities.” She said those newer plants are in Minnesota, Iowa and on the East Coast.
Crown Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CCK) (Crown) (www.crowncork.com), a leading supplier of metal packaging products worldwide, and EVRYTHNG, the Internet of Things (IoT) Smart Products Platform pioneer, are collaborating to help food and beverage brand owners harness the power of Internet of Things technology by embedding real-time, connected digital intelligence into billions of everyday consumer packaged goods (CPG).
As part of this groundbreaking collaboration in smart packaging for CPG products, Crown will print serialized codes that can be scanned by smartphones on products packaged in beverage, food and aerosol cans and specialty packaging tins at the point of manufacture. These ‘digital triggers’ are integrated with the EVRYTHNG IoT Smart Products Platform, giving each physical package a unique software identity and data profile in the cloud. The combination of smart packaging powered by smart software in the cloud makes billions of packaged goods more intelligent, more interactive, more trackable and more valuable to CPG companies and their customers.
Products that are #BornDigital™ in this way – manufactured with software capabilities in the cloud that can power new applications and analytics – enable brands to optimize their supply chains by improving product traceability and create a new channel for 1-2-1 consumer engagement.
Examples of smart product applications include:
*Product Information: Data about product nutrition, ingredients, manufacturing processes and distribution miles travelled can deliver total transparency to consumers about where a product came from and how it was made.
*Supply Chain Tracking: Brands can follow products through the supply chain capturing analytics for inventory management and parallel trade control.
*Loyalty Rewards: Consumers can interact with products to access personalized digital services, offers and content.
*Product Reordering: Consumers can use their smartphones to interact with, or reorder, products and access similar products that they may want to purchase.
*Brand Protection: Brands can bolster anti-counterfeit programs by enhancing products with item level digital authentication and real-time analytics.
*Personalized Content & Services: Consumers can access unique recommendations like recipe suggestions, beauty tips or health-related services and lifestyle content based on their individual preferences.
“One of the things that sets Crown apart from the competition is our ability to bring innovation at scale to metal packaging across a wide spectrum of product applications,” says Dr. Daniel Abramowicz, Crown’s Chief Technology Officer. “Thanks to our partnership with EVRYTHNG, we can now enable brands to generate new digital value from their products by enhancing their packaging with a rich portfolio of functionality and applications. The EVRYTHNG technology platform serves as an excellent vehicle to realize our CrownSmart™ and CrownSecure™ innovations.”
“We are excited to be working with Crown to disrupt a market of one trillion goods manufactured in metal packaging each year,” comments Niall Murphy, Founder and Chief Executive Office of EVRYTHNG. “As we build out an ecosystem of strategic packaging and labeling partners across different material types and industries, we are creating a standard where all brands across food, beverage, apparel, health and beauty, personal care and home care can exploit the real-time, connected intelligence built into their product packaging. This directly realizes our vision of #BornDigital™ consumer products which deliver applications, experiences and analytics at every stage in their lifecycle, from the time they are made, shipped and sold to the moment they are consumed and responsibly disposed.”
