Koehler invests in a more sustainable production

After a successful first rebuild stage of the paper machine 5 in Oberkirch, Germany – with the installation of the Voith SpeedSizer film press and contactless qDryPro Compact high‐performance drying system – Koehler Paper has confirmed its confidence in Voith. Hartmut Felsch, plant manager at Koehler, Oberkirch, Germany: “”In Voith, we have found a strong and reliable partner with the highest quality standards for all areas of paper production.”

Koehler has selected the full‐line supplier to deliver the second modernization stage, focusing on the much‐proven NipcoFlex shoe press. The aim is to achieve an optimal production result. With the installation of the NipcoFlex shoe press in the existing press section, the dry content after the press is significantly increased. As a result, large amounts of steam can be saved in the dryer section for drying the paper web. The rebuild thus helps save energy and reduce CO2 emissions in the plant. In addition, the higher dry content increases line speed and production capacity.

Promising future for the Tasman mill and Nature’s Flame

The Tasman mill has over the last period commenced production of paper for supplies into the Asian packaging markets in the form of Pulp on Reel. This is part of the ongoing strategic development process to transition the Tasman mill in New Zealand out of standard newprint production. As part of the same strategic review, Norske Skog has received significant inbound interest for Nature’s Flame pellets facility located close to the Tasman mill; therefore, Norske Skog has decided to launch a process to asses the best long term ownership structure for this operation. “The Tasman mill management and the larger Australasian organisation have shown entrepreneurial spirit in quickly developing an alternative business case for the mill, making good commercial use of existing assets and infrastructure on the site. I am certain that the continuing work will result in further ways to maximise the potential in the Tasman mill’s excellent fiber access and fiber processing competencies” says Norske Skog Chief Executive Officer, Sven Ombudstvedt.

Northern Pulp Nova Scotia and certain affiliates file for voluntary CCAA creditor protection

Paper Excellence Canada announced that 1057863 B.C. Ltd, Northern Pulp Nova Scotia, Northern Timber Nova Scotia and other related non-operating affiliates (collectively, “Northern Pulp”) have obtained an initial order under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (“CCAA”). The initial order stays proceedings against Northern Pulp in order to provide it with an opportunity to restructure its business and financial affairs. Paper Excellence Canada has not sought relief in the CCAA proceedings. Northern Pulp owns a pulp mill in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. The pulp mill, which had been operational since 1967, was forced to stop production by January 31, 2020, after the Province of Nova Scotia’s decision to require Northern Pulp to cease using the Boat Harbour Effluent Treatment Facility (BHEFT). This left the mill with no ability to treat or transport pulp effluent. Since January, Northern Pulp has been conducting a safe and environmentally sound hibernation of the mill, which would allow it to reopen in the event a proposed new Effluent Treatment Facility (ETF) receives the necessary approvals.
