Looking into our (wooden) housing future at Helsinki Design Week

Can you build a house overnight? Can it be beautiful, stylish and sustainable? The answer is yes – as the thousands of visitors to Helsinki Design Week can testify!

For the fourth edition of PEFC Wood Works, PEFC Finland teamed up with architect and environmental artist Marco Casagrande to showcase the future of living to the people of Helsinki.

As cities become more densely populated, we must find more agile ways to build, and live in, new housing solutions.

What’s the solution?
In the center of Helsinki, PEFC Wood Works x Tikku constructed a micro-size apartment house on just one parking slot in just one night. Tikku (‘stick’) is a demonstration of dense urban housing and Finnish wooden construction.

Even better, all the wood used in the installation comes from sustainably managed, PEFC-certified, forests.

Tikku6“The PEFC Wood Works design concept connects the users of wood with its sustainable origin,” said Auvo Kaivola, National Secretary of PEFC Finland.

“We tell the story of wood from the forest to design by collaborating with designers working with the material.”

“The aim is to raise the appreciation of wood originating from sustainably managed forests and the various ways it can be used,” Auvo concluded.

This year’s theme at Helsinki Design Week was Q&A – Questions & Answers. Looking for questions and answers highlights the fact that good design always entails good thinking. How can we use design to build better cities and a better society?

PEFC Wood Works concept has been part of Helsinki Design Week for many years, establishing a position for itself within the program.

Canada’s Forest Products Sector Responds to Launch of FSC’s New Certification Standard

Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) embraces third party certification and participated in FSC’s consultation process which was used to develop the new requirements. Today’s announcement marks the end of FSC’s multi-year consultation process with a number of key partners. “Canada’s forest product companies comply with hundreds of federal and provincial laws and regulations every day. We are among the most strictly regulated forestry sectors in the world,” noted FPAC President and CEO Derek Nighbor. “Even though third party certification is voluntary in Canada, 100% of FPAC’s member operations are certified by FSC, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), or the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). This support of independent certification systems is another reason why Canada is known as a world leader in sustainable forest management. The FSC standard is one of three voluntary programs used in Canada that has been endorsed by Canada’s Council of Forest Ministers (CCFM), all of which set high environmental, social, and economic thresholds for sustainable forest management. In the coming days, FPAC will be working with its members to review FSC’s new forest management requirements, as well as the changes taking place related to FSC chain-of-custody certification. Significant changes are expected between July and December, which will add to the complex transition that FSC users in Canada are embarking on.

Smurfit Kappa aligning climate change goal with Science Based Target initiative

Smurfit Kappa is taking another step forward in its sustainability journey by signing a commitment to align its CO2 target with the Science Based Target (SBT) initiative. The move follows on from the packaging leader recently revealing in its 2019 Sustainable Development Report that it has reduced its fossil CO2 emission intensity by almost a third (32.9%) since 2005. The SBT is a collaboration between the UN Global Compact, WWF, CDP and World Resources Institute (WRI). The initiative champions science-based target setting as a powerful way to boost companies’ competitive advantage in the transition to a low-carbon economy and focuses in particular on validating their CO2 reduction targets in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

Two Sides North America Announces Leadership Transition

After starting Two Sides North America nearly a decade ago and building it into the highly successful organization it is today, Phil Riebel will retire as president of the organization effective April 1. Kathi Rowzie, who has been running the day-to-day operations of Two Sides since last March, will become president. “Everyone who has worked with Phil over the years knows him as a trusted colleague and passionate advocate for the sustainability of print, paper and paper-based packaging,” said Jeff Hester, chairman of the Two Sides North America board of directors. “Our industry has benefitted enormously from his efforts to build Two Sides into an organization whose voice is recognized and respected across the paper value chain and among many of North America’s leading corporations. As Phil moves on from his Two Sides role to pursue other opportunities within the industry, I want to thank him on behalf of the board of directors for his dedicated service to our Two Sides members and our industry. Though Phil is stepping down, he will remain associated with Two Sides’ mission as a valuable advocate in our strategic efforts.”
