Mondi Plc full year results for the year ended 31 December 2021

Highlights
• Strong financial performance
◦ Underlying EBITDA of €1,503 million, up €150 million year-on-year (11%), with second half up 29%
◦ Profit before tax of €983 million, up 28%
◦ Basic underlying earnings per share of 154.0 euro cents, up 19%

Andrew King, Mondi Group Chief Executive Officer, said: “Mondi delivered strongly in 2021 and we see good opportunity to accelerate growth in sustainable packaging. Underlying EBITDA of €1,503 million was up 11% and ROCE up at 16.9%. We grew our packaging businesses and saw a recovery in uncoated fine paper markets. Our vertical integration, the agility of our operations and collaboration with our customers ensured we met surging demand at a time when supply chains were under pressure around the world. We implemented price increases across all our businesses and, against a backdrop of rising commodity input costs, we exhibited good cost control. Our focus on safety and protecting the wellbeing of our people remains our priority.

All this cannot be achieved without the dedication, stamina and ongoing commitment of our people. My sincere thanks go to all of my colleagues.

I am particularly proud of how we continue to lead the way in sustainability. We have accelerated our climate plans by committing to transition to Net-Zero by 2050 in line with a 1.5°C scenario, and made strong progress on all elements of MAP2030, our sustainability roadmap for the next 10 years, which we launched in early 2021.

EIB signs SEK 1.3 billion loan agreement with Billerud for bioproduct mill upgrade

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a SEK 1.3 billion (approximately €110 million) loan agreement with Swedish company Billerud, a world-leading paper and packaging materials supplier. The loan supports investments in the modernisation and upgrade of a bioproduct mill, including the replacement of a recovery boiler. The upgrades are well anchored in Billerud’s sustainability strategy and will secure high environmental performance for the mill, with increased energy and resource efficiency. Materials made at Frövi mill are used in various packaging applications, with a particular focus on food and beverage packaging — an area that has strict requirements in terms of durability and hygiene standards. Fibre-based packaging has the advantage of being fossil-free, recyclable, and biodegradable — features that set it apart from fossil-based types of packaging. Materials produced by Billerud can be recycled many times and made into recycled board, before finally being used for energy production.

DS Smith and Solarenn : a zero plastic partnership

“Eco-design is a business approach that requires investments and time in the long term,” explains the president of Solarenn, Christophe Rousse. A joint effort from three actors of the fruit and vegetable sector -the Solarenn cooperative, DS Smith as global supplier of sustainable packaging and ETpack mechanizer - has helped optimize tomato packaging throughout the supply chain. The common goal? Moving to more sustainable solutions and eliminating single-use plastic. They have therefore developed a 100% cardboard packaging which is eco-designed and innovative, allowing maximum flexibility and visibility of the product. The joint design was initiated in September 2020. This commitment fits the expectations of the French consumers, who are increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of their consumption and who are now questioning the food industry . For the past 2 years, there is indeed strong consumer’s pressure to eliminate single-use plastic. In 2021, Solarenn will have 7 different trays on the market that are 100% cardboard with zero-plastic.

Mars Food & Amcor announce industry-first move to launch recyclable microwavable rice pouch

Mars Food announced it will begin to use recyclable mono-polypropylene plastic (PP) for its microwavable rice pouches in 2021. The project will bring to market the industry’s first food-safe, mono-material microwavable rice pouch. Launching with an initial pilot in the first half of 2021, the business has ambitions to further scale the technology across its portfolio beginning at the back half of the year. The use of high performing mono-PP material will allow Mars Food to retain the shape, shelf life, functionality and high safety standards needed for its brands’ packaging, while ensuring pouches can be mechanically and chemically recycled where infrastructure exists, and designed for future recycling where it doesn’t yet. The breakthrough is a result of a three-year partnership between Mars Food and Amcor.
