PEFC welcomes Sappi as an International Stakeholder member

Like all our International Stakeholder members, Sappi will be a vital support in our work to ensure the sustainable management of the world’s forests.

“Credible, internationally recognised, robust forest certification systems like PEFC are fundamental to Sappi’s commitment to sustainability. These systems give assurance to our value chain of the origin of our woodfibre and responsible forest management practices,” said Steve Binnie, CEO of Sappi.

“Given that stakeholder engagement underpins our approach to doing business at Sappi, we welcome the opportunity to become a PEFC International Stakeholder member,” added Graeme Wild, Group Head of Sustainability and Investor Relations of Sappi.

“The collaboration reinforces our contribution towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals and in particular SDG 15 – Life on Land; given our common priorities to promote sustainable forest management and support smallholder forestry around the world.”

The new member
Sappi Limited is a leading global company focused on providing dissolving wood pulp and packaging, printing and writing papers, as well as biomaterials and biochemicals.

Headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, Sappi has over 12,500 employees in 35 countries and manufacturing operations on three continents.

Woodfibre, and thus sustainable fibre supply from responsibly managed forests, are at the heart of Sappi’s business. Sappi is committed to increasing the amount of certified woodfibre in its products and has been actively promoting forest certification for years.

PEFC International Stakeholder members
International Stakeholder membership is open to companies, organizations and associations with principles and objectives in line with PEFC.

International Stakeholder members are part of the PEFC General Assembly, the highest decision making body of the organization, which sets the strategic direction of PEFC. They can join PEFC working groups and committees on relevant topics including standards revision, marketing and regional promotions.

They can apply to PEFC’s Collaboration Fund for funding opportunities, partner with other PEFC members on projects around the world, and nominate representatives for the PEFC Board of Directors.

Stakeholders from around the world are invited to give feedback on the revised Belgian Forest Certification System. Deadline for comments is 1 December. Give your feedback. PEFC Belgium revised the country’s national forest certification system following the entry into force of the revised 2018 PEFC Sustainable Forest Management standard. Please note that the system revision and standard only apply to the Walloon region of Belgium. The Belgian system was submitted to PEFC after being revised in line with PEFC requirements. The national system is now undergoing the PEFC assessment process, carried out by an independent PEFC Registered Assessor. It must pass this assessment to maintain its PEFC endorsement.

Hungary Becomes Latest PEFC Member

PEFC International is delighted to welcome the Hungarian Forest Certification Non-profit Ltd. as the 41st national member joining the PEFC family. “We have learned from experience that PEFC is much more than a just label that allows consumers to make ethical purchases. PEFC is a cleverly designed, robust technical framework. Perhaps even more importantly, PEFC is a community of friendly people who care about forests and care about our future. We are proud to become a member of this community,” said Endre Schiberna, Head of the Standard Setting Committee. “Hungary is a perfect example of how the forestry sector can benefit from forest certification,” continued Mr. Schiberna. “While our forest related regulations are said to be among the most rigorous in Europe, the general public is unaware of this, even within the country. This means that Hungarian forest products are not favored by environmental-conscious consumers.”

In conversation with… PEFC and BWI talk people, forestry and certification

If the people who depend on forests for their livelihoods aren’t included in conversations about sustainable forest management, how can it be truly sustainable? After all, people and forests are closely linked. Forests contribute to the livelihoods of some 1.6 billion people worldwide, the majority of which are in rural regions of developing countries. This means sustainable forest management and certification have the potential to positively impact a huge number of lives around the world. This subject is at the heart of both PEFC and Building and Wood Worker’s International (BWI).
