Public consultation for new Indonesian community forest requirements

Community forests play an important role within Indonesia. Covering just 2.3 million hectares, these forests support the livelihoods of more than 3.4 million households.

The Indonesian national forest certification system achieved PEFC endorsement in 2014, and since then, more than 3 million hectares of forest have become PEFC certified. However, while uptake of forest certification has been successful among large companies, it has yet to take hold in the country’s community forests.

To make certification more accessible to the community forests, the Indonesian Forest Certification Cooperation (IFCC), supported by the 2015 PEFC Collaboration Fund, GIZ, and others, has developed new requirements for community forest management certification.

PEFC endorsement process
These new requirements have now been submitted to PEFC for endorsement, and as part of the process, are going through a 60-day global public consultation. We now seek comments and feedback from all interested parties to ensure full compliance of the new requirements with our Sustainability Benchmarks.

All comments received during the global public consultation will provide valuable information for the third-party assessor in determining whether the requirements comply with our international requirements.

Ahlstrom-Munksjö and Via Separations partner with the U.S. Department of Energy to enable energy efficiency

The Ahlstrom-Munksjö Mosinee plant in Wisconsin is teaming up with Via Separations to pilot a cutting edge energy efficiency project. Together, they are validating Via Separations’ Black Liquor Concentration System, which is driven by an innovation in membrane material and system design. Black liquor is the byproduct from the kraft process when digesting pulpwood into paper pulp removing lignin and other extractives from the wood, to free the cellulose fibers and allow for the papermaking process to occur. The new system will reduce energy requirements for this process, increase mill throughput, and increase production of coproducts which are used as a heating source for the plant. “In partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Industrial Technology Validation program and Ahlstrom-Munksjö, Via Separations is proud to support this trial. We can reduce the resource requirement per unit of pulp produced by implementing a step change process intensification,” said Shreya Dave, CEO of Via Separations. "At commercial scale, the technology has the potential to provide a 64% decrease in energy demand in the evaporator process."

Amazon Continues Renewable Energy Investments with Wind and Solar Projects in Australia, Europe, and the US

Amazon is investing globally to enable new renewable energy projects as the company works towards net zero carbon by 2040. Amazon’s first renewable energy project in Australia is a 60 megawatt (MW) solar project anticipated to come online in 2021 in northern New South Wales. Once complete, the project is expected to generate 142,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy annually, which is equivalent to the annual electricity of almost 23,000 average Australian households. Amazon’s newest renewable energy projects in Europe include 122 MW from an onshore wind project in Västernorrland, Sweden, expected to come online 2022, and a new 50 MW solar farm in Zaragoza, Spain, expected to begin operations in 2021. Once enabled, these projects have the capacity to power the equivalent of 158,000 average European homes each year.

Sustainable land use for future generations

“It’s not only about land use — in our operations we also take into account the limits and requirements set by nature and the ecosystem as a whole. The modern forestry practised by UPM is a great example of responsible land use,” emphasises Timo Lehesvirta, Director of Forest Global UPM. In addition to wood sourcing, other important elements of UPM’s approach are biodiversity, water protection, soil use and the benefits that forests provide. “Forests are an important part of the solution for mitigating climate change. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, produce oxygen and recycle water.
