Wiley and the Big Ten Academic Alliance Sign Agreement to Make More Peer-Reviewed Research Available

Global research and education leader Wiley, together with the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA), today announced they have reached agreement for a one-year contract extension with an open access option, as a pilot in collective action toward the Big Collection. The Big Ten Academic Alliance is a premier higher education consortium in the U.S. that includes major research institutions in 11 U.S. states.

The agreement enables researchers at 13 participating flagship universities and 17 affiliated campuses to publish accepted articles open access in all of Wiley’s hybrid open access journals in 2022. The agreement also provides access to all of Wiley’s subscription content across the consortium. The agreement aims to advance the goals of the BTAA Big Collection to move toward a sustainable open scholarship ecosystem.

“The essential role that high-quality research plays in society has never been clearer,” said Liz Ferguson, Senior Vice President, Wiley Research Publishing. “Researchers across the BTAA advance knowledge on a variety of pressing topics, and it’s a pleasure to be an early partner for them and their institutions in the joint goal of making more peer-reviewed research openly available.”

“We’re pleased to be able to take collective action and partner with Wiley as we explore how to move toward a more open and equitable future,” stated Maurice York, Director, Library Initiatives at the BTAA. “This pilot agreement will allow us to learn more about how the consortium can successfully participate in open access scholarship and make member research available to a broader audience.”

This agreement builds on many similar agreements Wiley has negotiated with other US-based institutions, including Carnegie Mellon University, Iowa State University, VIVA, the Carolina Consortium, and the Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium.

Gap Inc. Reports Second Quarter Results

The company’s second quarter fiscal year 2021 net sales of $4.2 billion were up 5% compared to 2019. Gross profit: $1.82 billion, an increase of $267 million or 17%. Gross margin: 43.3%, an increase of 440 basis points. Comparable sales were up 3% year-over-year, and up 12% versus 2019. The comparable sales calculation reflects online sales and comparable sales days for stores that were open on the same days in both the current and prior comparable period. Old Navy Global: Net Sales were up 21% versus 2019, with Old Navy maintaining its position as the #2 apparel brand in the U.S.1 Comparable sales were flat to last year and up 18% versus 2019. Gap Global: Net Sales declined 10% versus 2019, with permanent store closures resulting in an estimated 14% sales decline, and international COVID-closures driving an estimated 1% decline on a 2-year basis. Global comparable sales declined 5% year-over-year and increased 3% versus 2019. Banana Republic Global: Net Sales declined 15% versus 2019, with permanent store closures resulting in an estimated 10% sales decline, and international COVID-closures driving an estimated 1% decline on a 2-year basis. Comparable sales were up 41% year-over-year and down 5% versus 2019. Athleta: Net Sales were up 35% versus 2019. Comparable sales grew 13% year-over-year and 27% versus 2019.

The Tale of The Tape: The Literal Weight of the September Issues

Once again this year we decided to weigh the September issues. Without access to ad page data, book size becomes an increasingly more important indicator than in years past. And this year, the indicator is not good. September was always the one time when these publications truly believed big is beautiful, but they are starting to become as petite as those who grace their covers. To conduct this research we went out and procured the magazines the old fashioned way—on the newsstand. Here’s the rather disturbing thing: they weren’t all that easy to find. We visited a few different newsstands, asked the clerks about them, and were met with a blank stares. It wasn’t until we visited a major book retailer were we able to purchase all nine titles. Perhaps that alone is a telling enough indicator that the September issues don’t carry the weight they once did. Nevertheless, we still walked out of the store with nine magazines that weighed in at nearly 15 pounds (plus we got a really cool commemorative tote for buying Vogue).
