Metsä Board, a leading European producer of folding boxboards and linerboards, is to start live testing of foam forming on a production scale at its Kyro mill in Finland. The company has already done extensive development work for years to commercialise the new technology, which is expected to result in considerable benefits to its customers. In foam forming technology, the water-fibre suspension is aerated with a stream of tiny bubbles. By using foam forming, the paperboard structure becomes bulkier, lightening the board's weight. In addition, fibres are distributed more evenly in the web, improving formation of the board and resulting in more consistent properties and appearance. On top of these benefits, the technology reduces the use of raw materials, energy and water, enhancing sustainability.
Demand for forest industry products varied by sector. Paperboard production volumes remained high while the paper market situation continued to be challenging. The competitiveness of the Finnish forest industry is influenced by the domestic cost level and a predictable operating environment. In the first quarter of the year, paper and paperboard production volumes in Finland totalled 2.7 million tonnes, which is 1.4 per cent more than in the corresponding period in 2014. Printing and writing paper production in Finland totalled almost 1.6 million tonnes, which is 0.6 per cent more than in January-March 2014.

Time Inc. (NYSE:TIME) announced today that it has acquired Missouri-based FanSided, a sports, entertainment and lifestyle network of more than 300 websites with thriving communities. Launched in 2009, FanSided is one of the industry’s fastest growing independent digital content networks, with a collective audience of approximately 15 million unique visitors per month that generates an average of 50 million page views per month. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Xerox (NYSE: XRX) will increase its emulsion aggregation (EA) toner capacity by 40 percent with the completion today of a nearly $35 million expansion project to help Xerox keep pace with growing EA toner product demand. Developed by Xerox and protected by more than 300 patents, EA toner produces sharper images using less toner per page. Unlike traditional toner, which is created by physically grinding composite polymeric materials to micron-sized particles, EA toner is chemically grown enabling the size, shape and structure of the particles to be precisely controlled. This leads to improved print quality, less toner usage, less toner waste and less energy required for manufacturing and for printing. Xerox and Fuji Xerox have designed around 50 office and production printing products that use EA toner.
It’s the end of the line for Artisan Press after administrators at Deloitte confirmed there was no interest in the company as a going concern. All the firm’s remaining employees are now likely to be laid off by the end of the week, unless a last-minute purchaser emerges. Prior to the administration, the £32.5m-turnover web offset printer had employed around 180 staff.
Sonoco-Alcore S.a.r.l. today announced it will raise prices by €50 per metric ton on all recycled paperboard grades sold in the Company's Italian region. The price change is effective with shipments on or after 15th June, 2015.
