2023 BPIF Book Awards Call For Entries

The British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) is calling for entries to the British Book Design and Production Awards 2023 with two brand new categories for Innovative and Sustainable Books.

As one of the most prestigious and popular literary events of the year, these are the only industry awards to promote and celebrate the excellence and craftsmanship of the British book design and production industry.

All books published between 1 July 2022 and 7 July 2023 are eligible for entry in this year’s awards. There are 18 categories that represent the many various forms books can take. These include everything from Best British Book, Children’s Trade to Sustainable Books categories.

There is also a specific category for aspiring students to enter their work, with the opportunity to win a cheque for £500 as well as a short internship with a leading designer, publisher or printer.

A panel of industry experts from the areas of design, publishing and production will judge all the entries. In addition to the 18 category winners, the book that outshines the rest will win the title of ‘Book of the Year’.

Unit Sales Have First Weekly Holiday Increase in 2017

Unit sales of print books rose 3% in the week ended December 17, 2017, over the comparable period in 2016, at outlets that report to NPD BookScan. Last week was the first week that print unit sales were up over the comparable week in 2016 since the holiday selling season began during Thanksgiving week. The retail and club channel, which includes all bookstores plus Amazon, had a 5% increase in sales over the week ended December 18, 201, and with two weeks left to go in 2017, sales through that channel were up 3%. The mass merchandiser channel, however, continued to trend downward compared to last year. PRC Releases Analysis of Postal Service Finances in FY 2020

The Postal Regulatory Commission released its Financial Analysis, an examination of the U.S. Postal Service’s (Postal Service) financial results and 10-K Statements for Fiscal Year (FY) 2020. Despite an increase in Competitive products revenue, the Commission’s overall analysis supports the conclusion that the Postal Service is on a highly unstable financial path. Total net operating losses were $3.6 billion in FY 2020, continuing the trend of significant operational losses. When non-operating expenses are included, such as non-cash workers’ compensation costs and accruals to retirement accounts, the net operating loss of $3.6 billion becomes a total net loss of $9.2 billion. AAP May 2020 Statshot Report

The Association of American Publishers released its StatShot report for May 2020 reflecting reported revenue for all tracked categories, including Trade (consumer publications), K-12 Instructional Materials, Higher Education Course Materials, Professional Publishing, and University Presses. Total revenues across all categories for May 2020 were approximately $1.0 billion, a decline of 12.1% as compared to May 2019. Year-to-date sales were $4.3 billion, a decline of 4.5% as compared to the same period last year. Trade sales were down 7.9% year-over-year. Religious press revenues were up 7.0% year-over-year in May. Professional Books, including business, medical, law, technical and scientific, declined 3.7% for the month. University Presses declined 5.4% as compared to May of 2019.
