Stora Enso’s billion-euro investment in renewable packaging – Europe’s most modern consumer board production line inaugurated in Finland

The largest and most modern consumer packaging board production line in Europe was inaugurated on 18 August in Oulu, Finland. The new line was inaugurated by Prime Minister of Finland Petteri Orpo, Chair of Stora Enso’s Board of Directors Kari Jordan, President and CEO of Stora Enso Hans Sohlström, and Oulu mill’s Chief Shop Steward Olli-Pekka Kaikkonen. Stora Enso’s Oulu unit serves the growing demand for renewable packaging globally and contributes to the transition to a circular bioeconomy. At the same time, the production site supports Finland’s competitiveness and increases exports with products of higher added value. 

Stora Enso has invested EUR 1.1 billion in the now inaugurated production line together with other developments on the site area, amounting to a total of approximately 1.7 billion investment in the entire Oulu mill in 2019–2025. The investments have made it possible to convert former paper machines into board lines utilising the latest technology, while the environmental impact has been reduced by cutting fossil carbon dioxide emissions by 90%. The mill produces folding boxboard, kraftliners, paper bag material, and unbleached softwood pulp. Board materials are suitable for direct contact with food. Almost all of the Oulu mill’s production is exported.

After thorough analysis of the persistent shortage of economically available timber and challenging operating conditions in northern British Columbia, Canfor Corporation announced the permanent closure of its Polar sawmill in Bear Lake, BC and the suspension of its planned reinvestment in Houston, BC. This follows the announcement by our subsidiary company, Canfor Pulp, that one line of production will be indefinitely curtailed at the Northwood Pulp Mill. The Polar sawmill, with a production capacity of about 300 million board feet annually, has been curtailed since January 2024. The permanent closure will impact approximately 180 employees.

SCA to acquire 13,000 hectares of forest land in Latvia

SCA has signed an agreement to acquire forest land in Latvia. The acquisition comprises an area of 19,150 hectares, of which 13,100 is forest land. The purchase price is EUR 44.5m, approximately SEK 450m. The standing timber volume amounts to 1.8 million m3fo. Some areas of the acquired land that are not forest land, will be divested. SCA has so far acquired 30,000 hectares of forest land in Estonia and Latvia.

ND Paper Acquires Water Quality Center

Nine Dragons, Inc. (ND Paper) and Billerud Wisconsin LLC (Billerud) closed on an Asset Purchase Agreement, whereas ND Paper will own and operate Billerud’s Wisconsin Water Quality Center (WQC) and associated landfill and F&E landfill assets. The Water Quality Center is essential component of the Biron facility. The agreement ensures the mill’s uninterrupted production and ND Paper’s Biron facility will remain an integral part of the Wisconsin Rapids community. Five employees are responsible for operating the facility and will be joining the ND Paper team.
