Adapting PEFC Chain of Custody certification to future needs

With over 18,000 PEFC Chain of Custody certified companies worldwide, our Chain of Custody standard has a tremendous impact on internal management processes of numerous businesses along the timber value chain.

This means we must ensure the standard is the best it can be: that it is easy to use and meets customer expectations, while also respecting the integrity of our requirements and our system.

As a result, our Chain of Custody standard is one of the areas under review as we continue our standards revision process. The responsibility for this revision falls to Working Group 4, which got together for their latest meeting in July.

WG 4 is also responsible for revising our Logo Usage Rules – the standard covering the requirements for users of the PEFC logo and labels. This document helps ensure accurate, verifiable, relevant and non-misleading usage of the PEFC Logo and related claims.

Labelling is becoming increasingly important as consumers attach great importance to ecolabels and want companies demonstrating responsible sourcing through the PEFC label.

Key Projects to Benefit Biron Mill’s Operational Efficiency and Environmental Performance

Catalyst Paper Corporation announced that it will invest approximately $2.7 million (U.S.) in two projects at its Biron, Wisconsin mill that will improve operational efficiency and lighten its environmental footprint. One project will convert the fuel source of Biron's #4 boiler from high-sulphur coal to natural gas. The second project will modify the TMP reboiler to reclaim unused waste steam from the thermo mechanical pulping process to heat fresh water supplying the paper machines, decreasing the demand on both coal and natural gas. These projects offer significant environmental benefits. They will substantially reduce sulphur dioxide emissions, while achieving major reductions of particulate, nitrogen oxide and greenhouse gas.

Canfor Calls on BC Government to Rethink Old Growth Deferral Process

Canfor Corporation is issuing an open letter from Don Kayne, President and CEO, calling for an approach to the management of British Columbia’s old growth forests that is based on the facts of sound science and Indigenous traditional knowledge and a collaborative process that includes broad representation. “We can choose a path that brings First Nations, labour leaders, forestry professionals and communities together to develop a sustainable old growth management plan that protects our forests and ensures sustainable employment for our communities. We are asking the Government of British Columbia to rethink the old growth deferral process,” said Don Kayne, President and CEO, Canfor. “Together, we can build on the 75% of old growth forests that are already protected or outside harvesting areas.”

Falling Emissions, Rising Opportunity

The boiler at the heart of Georgia‐Pacific's Broadway mill in Green Bay, Wisconsin, arrived by barge on the banks of the Fox River more than four years ago. Designed to replace the company's largest coal‐fired unit, the new natural‐gas boiler has dramatically reduced emissions from the manufacturing process, and the surrounding community and environment are seeing the benefits. Sulfur dioxide, or SO2, is a natural byproduct of burning coal, which was needed to produce energy in making everyday household products such as Angel Soft® tissue, Quilted Northern® tissue, and Sparkle® paper towels. Cross‐discipline teams from operations, engineering, environmental, safety, and procurement working together at GP facilities across the country have driven a collective 59 percent reduction in SO2 emissions (nearly 30,000 tons) over the last 5 years, with goals for more reductions.
