SCA recognized as world leader for corporate action on ending deforestation

SCA has been acknowledged as a global leader for its sustainable use of timber products  with a position on the Forest A List for timber by the leading environmental non-profit, CDP. SCA is one of only eight companies to have achieved a commodity A grade.

This list features businesses that are on the path to sustainably sourcing or producing timber commodities, which is among the four key commodities linked to global deforestation.
Information provided by 175 large companies has been independently assessed against CDP’s scoring methodology – developed in collaboration with leading peers and experts in corporate deforestation risk management – and ranked accordingly by CDP’s lead scoring partner, the South Pole Group. SCA is one of eight companies that have been awarded an A grade for its deforestation management efforts, earning a position on this exclusive global list of corporate leaders.

During 2016, CDP has released three global ratings on how large companies address risks and opportunities associated with Climate Change, Water Management and Forest & Fiber. SCA has been recognized as a global leader and included in the A list in all three ratings.

This result is a recognition of the work done by many SCA colleagues working with FSC®/PEFC™, forest management, wood, pulp and fiber sourcing.

SCA is celebrated in CDP’s new report “Revenue at risk: Why addressing deforestation is critical to business success”. It has been produced at the request of 365 investors with US$22 trillion in assets by CDP. The report highlights the critical challenges facing businesses in building deforestation-free supply chains for cattle products, palm oil, soy and timber commodities.

JDI’s Partnership with Canadian Forest Service Backed by Innovation and Strong Forest Science

J.D. Irving Limited’s (JDI) partnership with Natural Resources Canada's Canadian Forest Service has led to the commercial development of advanced tree breeding, field testing and seedling production techniques. Maritime Innovation, JDI's new lab in Sussex, New Brunswick was designed to use advanced seedling production technologies based on selection from our native tree population for a range of high value traits such as fast growth rate, high wood quality, resistance to insects and disease and broad adaptation to climate change. A propagation method called Somatic Embryogenesis is used to produce large numbers of seedling from a broad range of genetically diverse trees which have been field tested across the region. Another aspect of the lab’s research involves fungi which live inside the needles and leaves of trees across our region which are called endophytes. A range of these fungi have been selected because they produce compounds which improve their host tree’s tolerance to insect and disease attack. Methods have been developed to inoculate small seedlings in the nursery with these special fungi which stay with the tree throughout its life. Investing in this technology will sustain diverse forests, contribute to a sustainable wood supply for the forest industry and improve tree tolerance to various insect and fungal pests leading to a reduction in pesticide usage.

UPM joins Together for Sustainability (TfS) initiative to enhance sustainability in its supply chains

UPM has joined Together for Sustainability (TfS), a chemical industry initiative that promotes and improves sustainability practises within its supply chains. By joining the initiative the member companies share a wide coverage of supplier data, such as audit reports and sustainability assessments performed by independent experts. "UPM's traditional businesses are having high exposure to chemical industry supply chain, not only on chemical raw materials but also on equipment and services." says Ilkka Nurmi, Senior Vice President, UPM Sourcing. "While UPM is not a chemical company, we actively work on portfolio transformation and have a great growth potential in biofuels and biochemicals businesses where we are heavily entering the arena of chemistry", he continues. Brussels Employee-led Tree Planting Initiative enters its 7th year

Dressed in wellington boots and rain jackets, the dedicated Tree Planting Team from Sappi Europe, including Berry Wiersum CEO, once again braved the Brussels weather to plant a further 1,250 saplings in the Forêt des Soignes. They were rewarded with rays of sunshine, and the feeling of satisfaction after a hard day’s work. The initiative has resulted in 16,250 trees planted since it started 7 years ago. Sappi’s employee-led tree planting initiative started in Spring 2010 in association with ANB (Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos), the equivalent of the Department of Forestry. This organisation is responsible for the planting of approximately 30,000 trees in the Forêt de Soignes every year as part of the National Forest Management Plan (Belgium). click Read More below for more of the story
