American Forest & Paper Association Releases August 2017 Containerboard Report

Sonoco Products Company, a global leader in high-value sustainable packaging, announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire Eviosys, Europe’s leading food cans, ends and closures manufacturer, from KPS Capital Partners, LP for approximately $3.9 billion. The Transaction accelerates Sonoco’s strategy to focus on and scale its core businesses and invest in high return opportunities, both organically and inorganically. Following the Transaction, Sonoco will be the leading metal food can and aerosol packaging manufacturer globally. Both Sonoco’s metal business and Eviosys have meaningful commercial momentum and the Transaction facilitates Sonoco’s ability to partner with customers and lead with innovation and sustainability. Eviosys is a leading global supplier of metal packaging, producing food cans and ends, aerosol cans, metal closures and promotional packaging to preserve the products of hundreds of consumer brands. Eviosys has the largest metal food can manufacturing footprint in the EMEA region, with approximately 6,300 employees in 44 manufacturing facilities across 17 countries. Sonoco estimates Eviosys’s 2024 revenues will be approximately $2.5 billion and its 2024 adjusted EBITDA will be approximately $430 million. Eviosys has meaningful commercial and operational momentum and has increased EBITDA by approximately 50% since 2021. Sonoco expects to achieve over $100 million of synergies from the integration of Eviosys with Sonoco’s complementary metal can business. Rodger Fuller, Sonoco’s Chief Operating Officer, will lead the integration with a focus on customer and supplier relationships, employee continuity, operational excellence, and synergy realization, while combining the best of Sonoco’s culture with the rich history and heritage of Eviosys.

Soilfood is processing the fibre-based side streams generated in the production of paperboard from manufacturer Metsä Board, into various soil improvement fibres for local farms. Soilfood has previously used these side streams from Metsä Board's board mills at Kemi and Äänekoski. Now the cooperation has been extended to the Tako mill, located in the centre of Tampere. Metsä Board's cooperation with Soilfood started with a research project initiated in 2015 by the Natural Resources Institute Finland. The study looked at how wood-based fibre sludge had the ability to reduce erosion and nutrients leaching from fields to water bodies. The large-scale use of side streams is part of a new circular economy approach, where raw materials are kept in use as long as possible and existing materials are re-used. The two companies are also working together to develop other new solutions for the beneficial use of existing production side streams. "Our goal is to have zero landfill waste from the processes of our paperboard mills after 2030. Currently, more than 99 per cent of our production side streams are used either as materials or energy.

Amcor together with Kimberly Clark, has launched packaging for its Eco Protect diapers with 30% recycled materials in Peru. The bags contain post-consumer recycled content and provide a more sustainable packaging solution for the hypoallergenic diapers made with certified, plant-based fibers. The new Huggies Eco Protect diapers packaging is designed and produced by Amcor for Kimberly Clark with a shared goal of contributing to a circular economy. The bag has been developed using recycled plastic film that has been processed to be reused as a raw material maintaining performance and minimizing impact on visual appeal.
