France and PEFC: Strong commitment to advance certification

“I would first like to thank Stéphane Marchesi, who, after 16 years of leading PEFC France, has decided it is time to move on,” said Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International, following two days in Paris.

“In these last few days I have met with senators, civil society organizations, numerous companies and the general public, and it has been fantastic to see the level of support of PEFC in France: a legacy of Stéphane’s commitment to PEFC over the last almost two decades.”

Mr. Gunneberg was joined by Peter Latham, Chairman of the PEFC International Board, in Paris in late September for a special two-day program as PEFC France launched their new model.

A particular highlight came on the second morning: a breakfast meeting held in the fantastic setting of the French Senate. Organized in cooperation with Culture Papier, a non-profit association federating paper industry operators to promote the cultural, economic and social roles of paper, it brought together senators and representatives from the paper industry.

“It is important to remember that paper consumption and sustainable forestry are not incompatible. In fact, paper produced from sustainably managed, PEFC-certified forests actually helps to ensure our forests will be around for generations to come,” said Mr. Latham.

Regional forest certification system for the Balkans submitted for endorsement

The PEFC Balkan Forest Certification Scheme was submitted to PEFC for endorsement earlier this month. The public consultation, which is your chance to give your feedback on this new system, will run from 4 August to 2 October. Our national members for Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, and Slovenia developed a harmonized framework for their national forest management standards to create this regional system for the Western Balkans. This is the second regional system submitted for endorsement. It follows the Congo Basin regional system, which is currently under assessment. UPM Receives Acknowledgement for Its Climate Actions

Sustainable forest management in Myanmar one-step closer

One year on, and our project to support Myanmar as it reforms its forest sector is gathering pace. This was clear last month, as the Myanmar Forest Certification Committee (MFCC) held its first annual multi-stakeholder coordination meeting. The half-day coordination meeting was attended by a range of stakeholders, including the Myanmar Government’s Forestry Department, Timber Enterprise and Department of Research and Innovation, FAO, FLEGT VPA advisors, international and national NGOs, certification bodies and the private sector. This coordination meeting marks an important step in this 3-year project to support the country as it transitions to the sustainable management of its forests, funded jointly by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, PEFC and MFCC.
