Give your feedback on the South African forest certification system

PEFC invites stakeholders around the world to comment on the South African national forest certification system, following its submission to PEFC for endorsement. To give your feedback, head to our Online Consultation Tool.

The South African Forestry Assurance Scheme (SAFAS) is one of our newest national members, joining earlier this year in May. This means it is the first time they have submitted their national system to PEFC for endorsement.

The PEFC endorsement process
The 60-day global public consultation is a vital part of the PEFC endorsement process. It is your chance to comment and provide feedback on any aspect of the national system.

The PEFC Registered Assessor that carries out the assessment will use the information received from this consultation to help determine the compliance of the national system with our international requirements.

Once the national system has successfully passed the assessment, the PEFC General Assembly votes on its endorsement. A two-thirds majority is required for a system to be endorsed.

Hachette Reports Progress on Green Initiatives

Hachette Book Group increased its use of paper from certified sources, and upped its use of recycled fiber in 2015 over 2014, according to a progress report released by the publisher. HBG’s carbon footprint rose by 9% in 2014 (the last year for which results are available), but HBG still hit its long-term goal of reducing its carbon footprint by 50%. It was able to hit that target thanks to substantial gains made in previous years. The company's increased use of carbon in 2014 was due to a 20% increase in ground product transportation, which HBG attributed to an increase in the sale of print books. Though shipping more books increased the amount of carbon HBG emitted in 2014, the company said it had declines in other areas that contribute to carbon footprint, including copy paper (20% reduction), mail transport (-19%), business travel (-12%), and employee commuting (-6%).

Domtar CEO: Shadow Regulations Pose Challenges to Sustainability

Government regulation can be a blessing or a burden. In every case, it’s the result of a public process. In contrast, says Domtar CEO John D. Williams, too many of today’s extra-governmental, voluntary programs — shadow regulations — fall short of this process. Shadow regulations are built on opaque algorithms and are of nebulous value, and they threaten the very transparency that legitimate sustainability regulations are supposed to advance. Recently, Williams spoke to the Charlotte Economics Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, to highlight our commitment to sustainable manufacturing as well as his concern about organizations that solicit and aggregate corporate data and rate companies without transparency or a remedy for inaccuracies. Ryerson students bust sustainability myths

Print is a responsible environmental choice and an important touchpoint of any marketing campaign. That was the key message the audience heard last Thursday during the annual Ryerson Colloquium organized by the students of the Graphic Communications Management program. Dubbed Revive, Breaking Sustainability Myths, this year’s event featured a panel that set about outlining and then busting some often-heard myths about the sustainability of printing and using trees. For instance Monika Patel, director of programs and communications at the Forest Stewardship Council, told the industry crowd that trees are a renewable resource that can be planted again, once cut down. And, while recycled paper is good, the world would run out of paper if we only used recycled fibres.
