For wealth to be sustainable, smallholders must be part of it, FAO & PEFC agree

“No economic growth is good for a country if it stays in the hands of the few. The same applies for forestry,” said Tiina Huvio, Chair of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Forest and Farm Facility (FFF) Steering Committee, and Programme Director for the Finnish Agri-agency for Food and Forest Development (FFD).

“To build sustainable wealth, you need to include smallholders in the value chain. Steps taken towards group certification, allowing small-size forest owners to participate, are also steps towards a stable society.”

Tiina was speaking at a smallholder workshop held at the end of September in Hue, Vietnam. Organized by the Vietnam Academy of Forest Sciences (VAFS), UN FAO-FFF and the FFD, the workshop looked to enhance smallholder forestry towards sustainable and profitable forest management in Vietnam

Rémi Sournia and Richard Laity from the Development Team of PEFC International participated in the workshop, discussing how PEFC group certification can bring smallholders together and enable them to gain market access.

“I am excited to be in Hue, identifying the many issues faced by smallholders and finding out how PEFC can help them enter into responsible supply chains, both nationally and internationally,” said Rémi Sournia, PEFC International Development Manager.

“Ensuring that smallholders can achieve certification and therefore access international markets, has always been at the heart of PEFC – this is why we developed group certification nearly two decades ago,” continued Rémi.

Group certification ensures PEFC certification is affordable and practical for the many thousands of small-, family and community owned forest around the world.

70% success rate for Two Sides in tackling Global Greenwash

Two Sides, the global initiative to promote the sustainability of print and paper, has reported a 70% success rate in persuading global organisations to remove misleading green claims from their communications as part of its worldwide anti-greenwash campaign. 377 of the world’s leading corporations, including banks, utilities, telecoms and insurance companies have been researched and checked by Two Sides, exposing 240 of those companies to be using misleading greenwash statements in their marketing and communications activities. To date, 168 of those offending companies have removed their misleading greenwash statements as a direct result of ongoing lobbying by the Two Sides initiative.

FSC blocks three companies from Peru

FSC has blocked three Peruvian certificate holders and their FSC certification has been suspended because they were unable to verify the origin of wood they sold and purchased from the Amazon. As a result, they can no longer claim FSC certifcation on their products, or use the FSC trademark label. They will also not be able to seek recertification until FSC lifts their blockage. The blocked and suspended certificate holders (along with their certifcate numbers) are: Maderera Rio Yaverija SAC (MADERYJA) (NC-FM/COC-002175); Maderera Rio Yaverija SAC (CU-COC-810564); Maderera Industrial Isabelita SAC (EMINI) (CU-COC-858403)
