Waddington Europe Starts to Localize ‘Closed Loop’ Packaging in Ireland

Leading European thermoforming packaging specialist Waddington® Europe, a division of Novolex®, has teamed up with Shabra, Ireland’s leading recycler and reprocessor of post-consumer waste (PCW), to purchase food-grade recycled PET (rPET) sourced from bottles, pots, tubs and trays to manufacture new rPET food packaging products at its Arklow production site.

Not only does the agreement help to further secure Waddington Europe’s long-term source of rPET, but it also enables the company to expand its line of Eco Blend® products made with post-consumer recycled content sourced domestically in Ireland back into the Irish market.

“Collectively, we hope these new agreements will advance our stake in localized plastics circularity in the Irish market,” said Eduardo Gomes, Managing Director of Waddington Europe. “We need to start moving to a more holistic and long-term view when it comes to the lifecycle and environmental impact of food-grade packaging. It’s just as important to consider the carbon footprint at its start of life as the environmental impact at the end of its life.”

Shabra has recently invested heavily in new sorting lines and a reprocessing facility, which provides intensively washed rPET flake for use directly into the thermoforming and packaging sector.

Spendrups invests in recycled plastic together with Trioworld

Spendrups, one of Sweden's leading breweries, has, in collaboration with Trioworld, switched to 30 percent consumer recycled plastic in all stretch and shrink film. This is used around pallets and drinking troughs to ensure load stability and transport safety. The transition to Trioworld's Loop alternatives with 30% PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) which is plastic that has been recycled after it has been used for the purpose for which it was manufactured, is made after extensive joint tests. This will provide an annual saving corresponding to approx. 150 tons of new plastic and 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (see information for calculation information).

Better with Less – Design Challenge finalists announced

The international packaging design competition Better with Less – Design Challenge, organised by Metsä Board was created to find new environmentally-friendly and functional packaging solutions for some of the world’s most frequently used and fastest growing types of consumer packages. The competition was launched in November and by the time it closed at the end of March 2018 there had been an impressive 302 design concepts entered from 38 different countries.
