Regional Forest Stewardship Standard for Smallholders in Indonesia approved

That’s why protecting both habitats and resources is so important to us. Our conservation efforts are a foundational part of our sustainability philosophy of responsibility, efficiency and engagement. The most recent example of our ongoing commitment to wildlife management and conservation is a new partnership with the American Forest Foundation (AFF). This partnership will help private woodland owners in northwest Pennsylvania and southwest New York improve habitats for at-risk bird and wildlife species. Through these conservation efforts, we hope to increase the number of landowners engaged in active management of their properties, including the long-term production of sustainable wood fiber. Below are some of the highlights from the 2016 Forestry and Forest Products Reports: All Forest Products Operations Summary Healthy Environment •Today’s JDI forestry and forest products operations will absorb more than we emit over the next 50 years. Planting almost 1 billion trees, and reducing emissions at our manufacturing sites means we will absorb 92 million tonnes of CO2 - equal to 360,000 cars off the road per year for the next 50 years. •58% green energy use from renewable fuels like biomass. •23% reduction in green house gas emissions over the past 3 years. •30% reduction in sulphur dioxide (SO²) air emissions over the past 3 years. •1,277 Conservation Sites, a 3.5% increase since 2015 as part of our voluntary Unique Areas program in Canada and the U.S. •55% waste to landfill was diverted for beneficial use. •Zero non-compliance issues following 3rd party forest certification audits in 2016, based on 145 indicators (environmental, social and economic) measured over 5 years. UPM Raflatac is expanding its RafCycle® recycling solution to China. RafCycle services were launched in Changshu on December 6, 2017 during a customer event. RafCycle is also being promoted at Labelexpo Asia in Shanghai on December 5-8. Hangzhou Changli is also the 100th RafCycle partner globally.The number of RafCycle partners has grown increasingly over the years as sustainability has become one of the key drivers in the labeling industry. Today more than 10 000 tons of label liner waste is being recycled in Europe through the RafCycle program. UPM Raflatac is actively searching for new RafCycle partners and the expansion to China is an important step in this process. The paper liner waste generated by the RafCycle partners in China will be delivered to Hangzhou Fulun Ecology Technology Co., Ltd. where the paper liner waste can be recycled back into pulp and paper.
