Endorsement for Russian National Forest Certification Scheme Expired

With the expiration of the Russian National Forest Certification Scheme on 31st August 2015, PEFC International advises that all certificates issued against the Russian Scheme are no longer recognized by PEFC.

PEFC limits the validity of endorsements of national forest certification systems to five years. National systems are required to revise their respective standards in multi-stakeholder processes to become eligible for re-assessment and potential re-endorsement. This allows for continuous improvement of standards through the integration of new scientific research, experience and best practices.

Equally important is that it encourages ongoing social dialogue among stakeholders, thereby enhancing mutual understanding, support and further development of the concept of sustainable forest management at national level.

What next?
PEFC informs that the revised Russian National Forest Certification Scheme was submitted for PEFC endorsement in early 2014 and is currently in the final stages of its assessment process. Once compliance with PEFC’s Sustainability Benchmarks is demonstrated, the scheme will be submitted to the PEFC General Assembly for re-endorsement.

Once the Russian Scheme has achieved re-endorsement status, certificates to the revised schemes will again be recognized by PEFC. PEFC will advise stakeholders accordingly.

South Carolina paper industry writes some pulp friction

South Carolina's paper industry has had just about enough of environmentally conscious email senders asking their recipients to resist the urge to hit the print button. Take ArborGen, the Ridgeville-based company that breeds new varieties of trees. It was originally founded by a group of paper manufacturers, including the former MeadWestvaco Corp. It hasn't forgotten its roots since being sold last year. "Notice: It's OK to print this email. Paper is a biodegradable, renewable, sustainable product made from trees," reads the signature on its spokeswoman's email. "Thanks to improved forest management, we have more trees in America today than nearly 100 years ago." GP Recycling Helps CRDC Global Create Value from Plastics

Plastic waste doesn’t have to be waste at all. It can be a resource. With the support of GP Recycling, the Center for Regenerative Design and Collaboration (CRDC Global) is converting plastics into a concrete additive called RESIN8. Now instead of ending up in a landfill or the ocean, those plastics can be used to make the concrete that goes into homes, businesses and infrastructure. “First and foremost, the big value of RESIN8 is keeping the plastic out of landfills,” said Kevin Butts, director of strategy and business development for GP Recycling. “On top of that, you’re able to substitute plastic for traditional aggregates to improve the performance characteristics of the concrete.” Concrete produced with RESIN8 is lighter and provides better insulation, according to CRDC Global. In non-structural concrete applications, RESIN8 can improve insulation by up to 35%, per CRDC Global.
