Public consultation: Belgian forest certification system

Stakeholders from around the world are invited to give feedback on the revised Belgian Forest Certification System. Deadline for comments is 1 December. Give your feedback.

PEFC Belgium revised the country’s national forest certification system following the entry into force of the revised 2018 PEFC Sustainable Forest Management standard. Please note that the system revision and standard only apply to the Walloon region of Belgium.

The Belgian system was submitted to PEFC after being revised in line with PEFC requirements. The national system is now undergoing the PEFC assessment process, carried out by an independent PEFC Registered Assessor. It must pass this assessment to maintain its PEFC endorsement.

An important aspect of the assessment process is the public consultation. Over the sixty-day consultation, stakeholders from around the world can give their comments and provide feedback on any aspect of the system. The Registered Assessor will use the information received from this consultation in their assessment of the system.

Focus Report Required from Northern Pulp

Environment Minister Margaret Miller released her decision today, March 29, on the environmental assessment of Northern Pulp’s proposed effluent treatment plant. The minister’s decision is to require the company to submit a focus report that provides more information. “We make our decisions based on science and evidence” said Ms. Miller. “In this case, I require more information to determine the impacts on the environment.” Through the environmental assessment process, the department received comments from government reviewers and more than 900 submissions from the public. Best Buy’s five-year-long drive to reduce its carbon footprint by at least 20 percent by 2020 was recognized as an unparalleled retailer achievement at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) White House ceremonies in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night. The reduction is part of the company’s effort to address climate change. Thanks to a combination of an industry-leading energy management system, store lighting retrofit and improved fleet and distribution practices, Best Buy was commended for exceeding its goal and reducing emissions by 26 percent since 2010.
