Making the Best Even Better: PEFC Revises Core Standards

Stakeholders globally are invited to nominate candidates to participate in the revision of some of the core standards of PEFC, the world’s largest forest certification system. The standards include PEFC’s global requirements for sustainable forest management, forest certification procedures, standard setting procedures at national level, and the PEFC assessment and endorsement process of national/regional forest certification systems. The nomination deadline is 22 February 2016.

“We review our standards every five years to ensure that they incorporate latest knowledge, best practices, and evolving stakeholder expectations,” explained Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International. “This process is of fundamental importance as these documents define not only the environmental, social and economic requirements for sustainable forest management, but also how implementation in the forest is certified.”

“Furthermore, we are reviewing the standards that provide the framework for the development of standards at national level, which is fundamental to PEFC as a bottom-up organization, and how compliance of national standards with PEFC’s Sustainability Benchmarks is verified,” Mr. Gunneberg continued.

Resolute Forest Products Wins 2017 AF&PA Sustainability Award for Energy Efficiency and Greenhouse Gas Reduction

“A series of environmental commitments led Resolute to implement voluntary and pro-active improvements to drastically reduce GHG emissions from their facilities,” said AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman. Resolute adopted a series of ambitious sustainability commitments, including a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (scope 1 and 2) from their facilities by 65 percent between 2000 and 2015. By improving the energy efficiency of their operations and increasing their use of lower carbon fuels, Resolute surpassed that goal. At the end of 2016, the company had lowered GHG emissions by 73 percent compared to 2000 levels, equivalent to the removal of 1.82 million cars off the road. AF&PA Responds to President Biden’s Leaders Summit on Climate

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Heidi Brock released the following statement in response to President Joe Biden’s Leaders Summit on Climate held virtually today and tomorrow with world leaders: “We welcome President Biden’s Leaders Summit on Climate. Paper and wood products manufacturers produce enormous amounts of carbon-beneficial bioenergy, integral to making sustainable products that meet essential needs around the world. Our industry will continue to create jobs and economic opportunities for Americans, especially as we push forward on a U.S. economic recovery effort. “AF&PA was one of the first U.S. manufacturing industries to adopt a comprehensive, quantifiable set of sustainability goals a decade ago in our Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 initiative. Included in this effort was a goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which we cut 23.2 percent by 2018, surpassing our goal. Since the 1990s, we also cut our GHG emissions in half, and looking forward, we will soon release the industry’s new sustainability goals for 2030, including a new ambitious target for further greenhouse gas reductions.
