AAP April 2025 StatShot Report: Overall Publishing Industry Down 4.0% for Month of April, and Down 0.2% Year-To-Date

Total revenues across all categories for April 2025 were down 4.0% as compared to April 2024, coming in at $931.7 million. Year-to-date revenues were down 0.2%, at $4.1 billion for the first four months of the year.

Trade (Consumer Books) revenues were down 2.7% in April at $734.1 million. In terms of physical paper format revenues during the month of April, in the Trade (Consumer Books) category, Hardback revenues were up 2.6%, coming in at $273.5 million; Paperbacks were down 3.8%, with $251.9 million in revenue; Mass Market was up 31.9% to $10.4 million; and Special Bindings were down 14.5%, with $12.4 million in revenue.

eBook revenues were up 0.3% for the month as compared to April 2024 for a total of $84.8 million, and the Digital Audio format was down 12.5% for April, coming in at $83.1 million in revenue. Physical Audio was down 47.1%, coming in at $400 thousand.

Revenue at Hachette Book Group rose 5.4% in the first half of 2017, over the comparable period in 2016, parent company Lagardere reported. The gain excludes $24 million from the Perseus Books publishing division, which Lagardere bought in March 2016. Conde Nast Announces December 2022 Issue To Be Last Print Edition of Allure (beautymatter.com)

Conde Nast continues its digital pivot with the publishing giant announcing plans to shutter the print edition of its beauty tome Allure, and the December 2022 magazine will be its last. Editor-in-Chief Jessica Cruel broke the news to staffers this week along with the information that employees' roles may change, but no layoffs have been confirmed yet. "Our brand is stronger than ever across social and digital and our success is testament to our collaboration as a team and because we know just how and where our audience is accessing content in today's ever-changing landscape," wrote Cruel. "It's our mission to meet the audience where they are and with this in mind, after our December print issue, we are making Allure an exclusively digital brand."

Barnes & Noble Reports Fiscal 2018 First Quarter Financial Results

Total sales for the first quarter were $853 million, declining 6.6% as compared to the prior year. Comparable store sales decreased 4.9%, as declines in non-book categories outpaced improved book trends during the quarter. The Company also experienced lower online and NOOK® sales during the quarter, which were impacted by the prior year eBook settlement and lower promotional activity. The consolidated first quarter net loss improved to $10.8 million, or $0.15 per share, compared to a loss of $14.4 million, or $0.20 per share, in the prior year. The consolidated first quarter operating loss of $15.2 million improved $6.2 million versus the prior year.
