AF&PA Calls for Infrastructure Investments in Support of U.S. Manufacturing Jobs

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Heidi Brock released the following statement on President Joe Biden’s infrastructure plan.

“AF&PA looks forward to working with the Administration and Congress on important infrastructure investment proposals, many of which are included in President Biden’s American Jobs Plan. Modernizing our nation’s infrastructure and investing in manufacturing jobs will be welcome improvements for the U.S. forest products industry, which employs approximately 950,000 individuals and manufactures nearly $300 billion in products annually.

“However, AF&PA cannot support the tax increases put forth in the Made in America Tax Plan. These increases would adversely impact U.S. manufacturing and put jobs at risk during a fragile economic recovery. This aspect of the proposal would significantly upset global competitiveness while undermining the promises of the American Jobs Plan.”

UPM and Paperworkers’ Union agree on first-ever business-specific collective labour agreements – strike ends at UPM mills in Finland

UPM and the Paperworkers’ Union have agreed on first-ever business-specific collective labour agreements for five UPM businesses. The strike at UPM mills in Finland will end immediately and employees will return to work. The strike covered UPM Pulp, UPM Communication Papers, UPM Specialty Papers, UPM Raflatac and UPM Biofuels units in Finland. UPM will restart customer deliveries as soon as possible. The conciliator submitted settlement proposals for separate collective labour agreements for UPM Pulp, UPM Communication Papers, UPM Specialty Papers, UPM Raflatac ja UPM Biofuels yesterday, and both parties approved them on April 22, 2022.

Feldmuehle Uetersen to be sold to holding company

The continued existence of Germany's specialty paper manufacturer Feldmuehle Uetersen, which has been in insolvency proceedings since January this year, is assured. With effect from 1 June, the company will be taken over by a holding company, according to Andreas Jung, spokesman of insolvency administrator Dr. Tjark Thies. The company reports that the buyer is a holding company that has not yet been active in the paper industry. Paper production is said to continue unchanged. Feldmuehle Uetersen can produce up to 250,000 tpy of white, coated label paper, packaging paper, and graphic paper.
