AF&PA Elects Two New Board of Director Members at Summer Board Meeting

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) announced the election of Resolute Forest Products President and CEO Yves Laflamme and Sonoco Products Company President and CEO Robert Tiede to serve on its Board of Directors. The election took place during the June 28 summer board meeting.

AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman issued the following statement, “Yves Laflamme and Robert Tiede bring deep industry experience and valuable leadership to the table as we work to advance the paper and wood products industry’s top advocacy priorities. We are one of the largest manufacturing sectors in the nation – eager to innovate and invest in the future with the help of common sense public policy, including regulatory reform, free and fair trade and efficient transportation measures.

Together, we will put our companies’ compelling story and its needs before the administration, Congress and decision makers at the federal and state levels so they can take the action necessary to help us grow the economy and create American manufacturing jobs.”

Laflamme fills the seat left by the retirement of Resolute President and CEO Richard Garneau and Tiede fills the seat left by the retirement of Sonoco President and CEO M. Jack Sanders. The AF&PA Board of Directors consists of 23 top industry leaders who represent a broad spectrum of companies in the paper and wood products manufacturing sector. Metsä Group to draw up biodiversity plans for its mill areas – Kemi the first in line

Metsä Group plans to boost biodiversity on its land areas in Kemi. Covering more than 650 hectares, the designated site encompasses Metsä Group’s mill area and other areas in the Kemi urban environment. Metsä Group’s operations in Kemi include a bioproduct mill, currently under construction, and a paperboard mill. The company aims to increase regional biodiversity at all its mill locations across Europe, which number more than 20. The goal is to modify land use on the Metsä Group Kemi site to improve the state of nature in the industrial environment. The special features of local nature will be taken into account in the project, and the living conditions of endangered species will be improved. Biodiversity in the area will be increased experimentally and by adopting new operating methods. For example, more than 12 hectares of meadows and sunlit habitats will be added to the Kemi mill area. Only local vegetation will be used in establishing open habitats, and these habitats will be made suitable for endangered species. Various other approaches to increasing the biodiversity of industrial environments will also be tested on the mill site.

Norske Skog 2Q 2020 Results

Norske Skog’s EBITDA in the second quarter of 2020 was NOK 138 million, a decrease from NOK 379 million in the first quarter of 2020, mainly due to national restrictions on movement of goods and people following the outbreak of the corona pandemic. The restrictions had severe negative impact on operations due to a sudden and considerable drop in demand for publication paper. Operating earnings in the second quarter of 2020 were NOK -122 million compared to operating earnings of NOK 90 million in the first quarter of 2020 impacted by impairment recognized in the quarter. Net loss in the quarter was NOK 59 million compared to a net loss of NOK 374 million in the previous quarter. The previous quarter was impacted by unrealised currency loss that was only partially reversed in the second quarter as NOK was stronger at the quarter end. Cash flow from operations was NOK -109 million in the quarter compared to NOK 470 million in the previous quarter.

COLORED PAPERS: Do deep colors affect the recyclability of paper?

Fedrigoni has set the goal for 2030 to have 100% of its special paper families with a verified level of recyclability according to the Aticelca 501/19 method, one of the most rigorous and in line with current regulations. If the paper product falls into one of the four recyclability classes (A+, A, B, C), it means that it can be collected in paper and recycled in paper mills, and the company is authorized to use the “Recyclable with paper – Aticelca® 501” mark for commercial purposes. More intense colors can generate a drop in recylability class (for example, bringing the classification from an A+ level to an A level if going from a light color to a more intense one), limit the use of paper, or require a greater use of colors or coatings to cover intensely colored fibers. In addition, the recycling of differently colored and deep papers leads to the creation of gray recycled papers, with optical inhomogeneity; these papers can only be used for limited applications (for example, inside a box).
