Amcor Ghent celebrates packaging innovation powered by a century of expertise

Amcor (NYSE: AMCR, ASX: AMC), a global leader in developing and producing responsible packaging solutions, celebrated 100 years of packaging excellence at its Belgian site in Ghent. This centenary coincides with the first anniversary of the Amcor Innovation Centre Europe. For a century, Amcor Ghent has been at the forefront of packaging advancements. The site’s rich history notably includes the invention of easy-peel film technology in 1972, now a global standard for sterile medical equipment packaging and pre-packaged slices of charcuterie and cheeses.

Building on this legacy, last year Amcor Ghent underwent a significant expansion and became home to the Amcor Innovation Centre Europe (AICE), a collaborative space where Amcor experts and brands co-create the future of packaging. In the AICE, materials scientists team up with packaging designers to develop innovative solutions that address the evolving needs of the European market.

Successful start-up of Cascades Containerboard Packaging plant in Bear Island, Virginia

Cascades inc. is very pleased to announce that it has produced yesterday its first roll of 100% recycled containerboard at its Bear Island, Virginia mill. With annual production capacity of 465,000 short tons of lightweight, high-quality, 100% recycled containerboard, the state-of-the-art mill is equipped to perform within the top quartile of its industry, and will strengthen the operational flexibility, geographic footprint, and competitiveness of Cascades' Containerboard platform. The project created 700 jobs in the region during the construction phase, and 180 permanent jobs with the onset of commercial production. The Bear Island mill is now entering the ramp-up phase of the machine and will gradually increase its production to reach full capacity. An official inauguration will be held in the coming months.

SCA to increase kraftliner prices by €50 per tonne

SCA increases the prices on white and brown kraftliner in Europe by €50 per tonne. The new price is valid from June 1, 2021. “The global demand for kraftliner continues to be high”, comments Mikael Frölander, VP Sales and Marketing Containerboard. “The capacity is limited to increase kraftliner deliveries and increasing costs for raw materials supports a price increase.”

In its continuing efforts to discover and develop innovative technologies for the packaging industry, Amcor (NYSE: AMCR; ASX: AMC) announced today its strategic investment in PragmatIC Semiconductor, a world leader in ultra, low-cost electronics. Based in the United Kingdom, PragmatIC Semiconductor develops flexible, integrated circuits beyond the scope of conventional electronics. Their ConnectIC® family of radio frequency identification and near-field communications (RFID/NFC) integrated chips can be embedded into packaging to store and relay information to devices such as smartphones.
