Annual Environmental Training for JDI Foresters and Contractors – 800 Hours to a Team of Over 200

Every year in the spring and summer, JDI Chief Naturalist Kelly Honeyman and JDI Fish & Wildlife Manager John Gilbert team up to coordinate over 800 hours of training to over 200 contractors and foresters in the regions where JDI operates. The environmental training includes:

• Rare Plant Habitat Identification and Training
• Stick Nest Identification and Protection Policy
• Operating near watercourses, including vernal pools and wetlands
• Unique Areas Program
• Review of Species of Concern Guide
• Review of Forest Certification Process and Successes

JDI’s biodiversity strategy encompasses research, training, and the application of technology to ensure that our forestry operations meet our biodiversity objectives. JDI’s international award-winning Unique Areas Conservation Program has grown from 29 sites in the 1980’s to 1,454 sites in 2018.

These sites include:
• Birds & Mammals
• Fish
• Lakes & Wetlands
• Unique Forest Stands
• Old Growth & Conservation Forests
• Plants
• Historic Sites
• Geological & Fossil Sites
• Reptiles & Invertebrates

Together, these sites make up 187,376 acres of preserved landscape.

Gabon confirms leadership in driving sustainable tropical forest certification

Gabon’s aspiration to become a world leader in certified tropical wood has taken a big step towards realization, following a special certification forum organized by the Ministry of Water and Forests in late November. Stora Enso will bring renewable materials to Seefeld Nordic World Ski Championships 2019

The renewable materials company Stora Enso will be the Presenting Sponsor for FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld, Austria. The sponsorship gives Stora Enso the possibility to contribute to a sustainable sports event and showcase its renewable solutions in various applications. Throughout the event, Stora Enso wants to increase the participants’, viewers’ and visitors’ awareness of the benefits of sustainable products. Stora Enso’s products provide a climate-friendly alternative to many products made from fossil based materials, and have a smaller carbon footprint. During the World Ski Championships, a variety of products and solutions based on renewable raw materials will be show casted, such as wood for temporary buildings, carton board packaging, paper, effective waste management systems, and renewable materials for arenas. This marks the third time Stora Enso will be sponsoring the Nordic World Ski Championships, after being the Presenting Sponsor for the 2017 event in Lahti, Finland, and a main sponsor of the event in Falun, Sweden in 2015. WWF Russia and UPM release guidelines on sustainable forest management for wood suppliers

WWF Russia and UPM have today released The Guidelines on Sustainable Forest Management for Wood Suppliers in Russia. This cooperation aims to help wood suppliers in adopting ecologically, socially and economically sustainable practices in wood supply and forestry. The guidelines bring together the requirements set out in both Russian legislation and international voluntary forest certification schemes. They offer practical instructions and provide examples of best practices in safeguarding biodiversity, mitigating environmental impact and encouraging work safety and interaction with local communities and other stakeholders.
