Appleton Coated receives WWF Environmental Paper Award 2016

Appleton Coated has received the WWF Environmental Paper Awards 2016 (Category “Striving for Continual Improvement”) for screening the forest, climate, and water footprint of selected paper products with WWF’s Check your Paper Method.

Appleton Coated senior vice president of marketing & customer services, Ann Whalen, comments, “Appleton Coated strives to make it easy for customers to choose environmentally-responsible papers. WWF recognizes our efforts to expand our offering of higher post-consumer recovered fiber products.  In areas where we have made less progress than desired, the WWF focus on transparency and continuous improvement pushes us to be more innovative and diligent in those efforts.”

WWF created the Environmental Paper Awards to recognize and encourage company efforts in reducing the forest, water and climate footprint of paper products.  WWF’s Check your Paper Method reduces the complexity in evaluating a paper’s footprint by using relatively few, but carefully selected, environmental indicators.

With a focus on recycled fiber, Appleton Coated continues to expand its environmental product offering in both its coated and uncoated lines, adding many new product options with high post-consumer recycled fiber content levels, up to 100% in some cases.

The first North American coated paper mill to be Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified (FSC® C007796), Appleton Coated maintains ISO14001 certification. It is an 8 year Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay® Transport Partner and 2015 SmartWay Excellence Award Winner. Call for proposals: Consultancy on PEFC position in the carbon arena

We have launched a call for proposals for consultants to conduct research on PEFC positioning on the carbon arena. Recognising the importance of forests and PEFC certification in climate change mitigation, especially regarding greenhouse gas emission removal and avoidance, several PEFC national members have been working on the carbon initiatives with their own approaches. PEFC Carbon Task Force was established in August 2023 with the mandate to identify the PEFC carbon approaches that could be applied across the PEFC alliance. The PEFC carbon approaches should enable PEFC certificate holders to demonstrate the positive impact of PEFC certification in climate change mitigation and adaption. PEFC is looking for consultant(s) to conduct research on specific topics ensuring that the needed information is available, to support the Task Force in achieving its mandate.

Bringing sustainable forest management to Ethiopia

Ethiopia’s forests support the livelihoods of millions of people. But as we see elsewhere around the world, these forests are continually threatened – cleared to become grazing and agricultural land, or simply the space is needed for ever increasing populations. “While there is a clear need for sustainable forest management within the country, Ethiopia is actually in a great position to develop a national forest certification system,” said Rémi Sournia, Projects and Development Officer for PEFC International, following his outreach trip which saw him travel around the country to meet with stakeholders, farmer unions and government. “We now plan to start working on the development of a project in the country, collaborating with a range of partners including ENAO, Ethiopia’s accreditation organization, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, universities and farmer organizations.” click Read More below for more of the story
