Asia Pulp & Paper Commences Pilot Audit for Enhanced SGLS Certification

Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement with the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) to commence with a pilot audit of one of its supplier concessions, an event that marks the commencement of the assessment process for the enhanced Singapore Green Labelling Scheme (SGLS) certification.

The agreement was signed today by Sinar Mas Group Country President and APP Managing Director, Mr Bernard Tan.

Under the agreement, the enhanced SGLS pilot audit will commence this month, with a full audit to follow. In accordance to the label’s enhanced criteria, APP will provide full disclosure of its supply chain, including those not involved in products sold to Singapore1, for the assessment.

“The signing of this agreement to begin the enhanced SGLS certification process with SEC is the culmination of months of hard work on both sides. It reflects both our belief in the credibility and robustness of the new label and our desire to be recognised under this certification,” said Mr Tan.

He added: “The criteria under enhanced SGLS, including newly introduced requirements for Fire and Peatland Management, sets a higher bar of accountability for companies. We welcome these more stringent requirements and have the utmost confidence that our efforts and investments in combating fire and haze will be recognised.”

APP is one of the largest pulp and paper groups in the world. Over the past two years, the group has invested US$80 million in forest fire containment and haze control, and will continue to invest more in such efforts in the coming years.

Cedar Springs Achieves Wildlife At Work Certification

The team at our Cedar Springs, Georgia, mill believes not only in being a good neighbor, but also a responsible environmental steward. In fact, the Wildlife Habitat Council recently certified the mill as a Wildlife at Work property, a distinction designed to recognize outstanding habitat management on industrial lands. Wildlife at Work certifications aren’t easy to come by, but for Cedar Springs, the recognition is well-deserved. The employees working at the nearly 5,000-acre site go out of their way to minimize disruptions to wildlife living in the area. For example, the team has carefully relocated a dozen gopher tortoises over the years to ensure the animals are not harmed when a mill expansion or construction project occurs. Other species the team is working to increase include bluebirds, purple martins, bats, and insect pollinators, and it protects endangered mussels living in the Sawhatchee Creek, which runs through the property. The team is also planning to replant longleaf pine trees on 300 acres of the site, a move which will benefit a multitude of indigenous creatures, including the gopher tortoise.

Smurfit Kappa embraces green energy at Spanish paper mill

Smurfit Kappa has announced a €6 million investment at its Sanguesa paper mill in Spain, which will see the construction and installation of up to 12,000 solar panels on land adjacent to the mill. The solar panels will reduce CO2 emissions by over 3200 tonnes annually and provide significant cost savings. Once operational, it is estimated that the panels will generate more than 10 GWh of power annually which will reduce the current external electricity consumption and dependency by 7%. The Spanish solar energy project is the latest for Smurfit Kappa which has launched similar initiatives in other plants in Spain, Colombia and Mexico to generate sustainable energy. The mill at Sanguesa is one of Smurfit Kappa’s key facilities that produces light MG kraft paper, a packaging solution widely used across industrial and consumer markets in products such as grocery bags and wrapping paper. Its customer base includes some of Europe’s largest brands.
