Book Manufacturers’ Institute Brings Back Book Manufacturing Mastered

The Book Manufacturers’ Institute (BMI) is bringing back its industry event Book Manufacturing Mastered. The 2022 version will be held Thursday September 15th at the Westin Chicago North Shore. The first event was held February 10–11, 2020 in New York City just prior to the pandemic.

Book Manufacturing Mastered 2022 will feature a morning “Paper School” that will cover all things paper. As it is one of the, if not THE, top challenges facing the industry today, attendees will learn how it’s made to its different properties, to the impact it has on the environment. After a networking lunch, the afternoon panel featuring both publishers and manufacturers will give everyone a lay of the land as it stands today. Then attendees will have the chance for roundtable discussions with publishers, printers and suppliers about the top challenges facing the industry today and how they can be addressed. Lastly, the day will end with a networking cocktail reception that will feature tabletop exhibits from printers and suppliers to allow publishers in attendance to speak directly with those that help bring their ideas to print.

We’ve been trying to find the best way to bring it back as we see the need to bring publishers and printers together during this changing environment. It is critical that publishers, manufacturers and suppliers are all on the same page to ensure the success of the industry. This event helps to foster learning between all three groups while also giving folks the opportunity to have those critical conversations.”

Working with BMI, Book Manufacturing Mastered is being produced in partnership with a number of other book related trade associations, including: the Book Industry Study Group (BISG), the Association of American Publishers (AAP), the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA), the Protestant Church-Owned Publishers Association (PCPA) and the New York Book Forum.

The event is organized by an advisory panel comprised of publishers, manufacturers and suppliers. Also assisting the event are sponsors HP, Maple Press and Midland Paper.

PRC Evaluates USPS 2017 Performance and 2018 Performance Plan

The Postal Regulatory Commission (Commission) issued its analysis of the United States Postal Service (Postal Service) fiscal year (FY) 2017 Annual Performance Report and FY 2018 Performance Plan. Each year, the Commission must review the Postal Service’s performance goals, evaluate whether the Postal Service met those goals in the previous fiscal year, and offer recommendations regarding the protection or promotion of public policy objectives. The Commission’s review finds that, for the first time, the Postal Service’s FY 2018 Plan complies with legal requirements, and the FY 2017 Report meets most of the requirements. The report further provides an in-depth evaluation of the Postal Service’s four performance goals: 1) High-Quality Service, 2) Excellent Customer Experiences, 3) Safe Workplace and Engaged Workforce, and 4) Financial Health, which either did not meet or only partially met FY 2017 targets. Privatization is Not the Answer to What Ails the Postal Service

In its Government Reform Plan, the Administration made the case for privatizing the Postal Service, and preparing for an eventual change through recommendations coming in August from the President's Task Force on the Postal System. The business community – mailers and suppliers in the paper, printing and technology industries collectively generating $1.4 trillion in sales annually and supporting 7.5 million jobs – strongly believes privatization is not the answer for a postal system in financial distress. "Our troubled postal system can be fixed in a two-step process that does not resort to a draconian solution unproven at the gigantic scale of the U.S. Postal Service," said Art Sackler, Manager of the Coalition for a 21st Century Postal System (C21), which broadly represents the industry. Those two steps would be removing $tens of billions in liabilities to prefund retiree health care imposed on the Postal Service in the short-term, and considering whether and what business model or other changes would have to be made to sustain USPS in the long-term. "The mere prospect of privatization will sow confusion, uncertainty and concern about maintaining mail and package delivery around the country, and stimulating still more volume and revenue loss when the major problem has been a drop off in mail," Sackler added.
