Clearwater Paper Announces Revised Multi-Year Sustainability Goals and Continued Commitment to Progress in 2022 ESG Report

Clearwater Paper Corporation (NYSE: CLW) today released its 2022 environmental, social and governance (ESG) report. Along with a continued commitment to create sustainable paper products, the report also highlights a significant increase in company-wide priorities to meet several key sustainability benchmarks. These include emissions reductions, resource conservation and company representation, among others as part of revised, multi-year goals.

“These goals are the most ambitious we have committed to as a company and represent our desire to make measurable progress in several areas while continuing to act as responsible citizens and contributors in the communities where we operate,” said Clearwater Paper CEO Arsen S. Kitch. “This path forward supports our sustainability journey over the next decade.”

In this year’s report, Clearwater Paper states their plans to achieve a 30% reduction of Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030; achieve female representation of 30% or greater of their salaried workforce through 2030; and include ESG targets, goals, and outcomes in executive compensation.

Report Highlights:

*Completion of a first report through CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), enabling efforts to quantify greenhouse gas emissions output and further refine climate impact reduction goals. *Recorded zero serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs) in 2021
*Reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by a total of 12% in 2021 vs. 2020 baseline
*Reduced 2021 water usage by 5% compared to 2020
*Launched a new diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) strategy with a specific goal of achieving female representation of 30% or greater of their salaried workforce through 2030

Verso Publishes 2014 Sustainability Report: One Vision. One Voice.

2014 Sustainability Highlights •Verso demonstrated industry-leading safety performance, with a 2014 Total Incident Rate of 1.43, which is approximately one-half the U.S. Paper Industry's last reported average of 2.8 (2013). •The Quinnesec Mill in Michigan was recertified to Star status in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). VPP recognizes facilities for having safety systems that exceed OSHA standards, a strong safety commitment and sustainable health and safety management systems. •Fifty percent of the fiber Verso used to manufacture its products was third-party certified to a credible forest certification standard and 32 percent of the total paper it sold was chain-of-custody certified. •Carbon-neutral, wood-based biomass accounted for more than 65 percent of onsite energy generation at Verso's mills.

Two Sides Global Anti-Greenwashing Campaign Momentum Continues as More Companies Remove Anti-paper Environmental Claims

As banks, utilities, telecom companies and government agencies face mounting economic uncertainties, many of these services providers are looking to cut costs by encouraging their customers to switch from paper to digital communications. But all too often, these cost-cutting appeals are cloaked in unsubstantiated and misleading environmental marketing claims that suggest going paperless is “green,” “saves trees” or “is better for the environment.” “These greenwashing claims not only fail to comply with established environmental marketing standards, but they also damage consumer perceptions of paper’s environmental sustainability,” says Two Sides North America President Kathi Rowzie. “And that’s a threat to the economic security of millions of people in the United States and Canada whose livelihoods depend on the paper, print and mailing sector.” North America’s leading corporations and other service providers influence millions of consumers every day with their anti-paper greenwashing claims, leading many to believe that the use of paper is destroying forests and is bad for the environment. For example, a 2021 Two Sides survey of U.S. consumers showed that 60% believe that U.S. forests are shrinking, when in fact, U.S. net forest area increased by 18 million acres over the past 30 years – the equivalent of 1,200 NFL football fields every day – according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Global Forest Resources Assessment. The UN FAO reports that Canada’s net forest area remained stable at around 857 million acres during the same period.
