Evergreen Packaging Unveils Sentinel™ Barrier Cupstock

Evergreen Packaging®, a global leader in liquid and food-grade packaging board, today unveiled Sentinel™ Barrier Cupstock, a new retail packaging offering in the company’s Sentinel™ line of fiber-based products. Sentinel™ Barrier Cupstock is designed as a sustainable alternative to existing foil-lined paper cups and polypropylene cups. Potential end uses for Sentinel Barrier Cupstock include barrier cups to hold cereal, cookies, candy and other snacks.

Evergreen Packaging is focused on developing innovative fiber-based products to meet the business goals of customers and sustainability preferences of consumers. Sentinel Barrier Cupstock is a sustainable packaging option because it’s made with renewable materials and renewable energy.  Over 80% of the Sentinel Barrier Cupstock is paper from trees that come from forests where responsible forestry practices are used, and over 50% of the renewable energy used in the manufacturing process comes from biomass. This new product in the Sentinel™ line, which includes a Fully Renewable Cupstock and Ice Cream Board, reflects Evergreen Packaging’s continued commitment to the use of renewable resources.

Sentinel™ Barrier Cupstock is available in a board caliper of .012 – .020 inches and is designed to meet a range of category-specific oxygen and moisture barrier requirements. It’s suitable for direct converting applications, offers outstanding print quality performance, and provides a high-level barrier to protect product freshness and extend shelf-life.

Evergreen’s line of Sentinel™ paper and paperboard products are designed to be used in a range of food service and retail food packaging applications and are customizable to meet converter and brand owners’ barrier and shelf-life needs. The products can be converted into a variety of formats including cups, trays, plates, ovenable board, cartons, flexible packaging and box liners as well as a wide range of other formats.

According to a study by the US market research institute Smithers, the total value of folding carton production will reach 160 billion US dollars by 2026. Defining the message for recyclable packaging and reusable alternatives

What does it take to persuade consumers to choose your product over similar products on store shelves? One key factor is understanding consumers’ non-negotiable packaging priorities, such as hygiene, convenience, and sustainability. When introducing new reusable packaging or recyclable fiber-based solutions, conveying the right message about the package is vital to overcoming these obstacles getting your product chosen. Consumers are open to reuse systems. We recently conducted a survey of European consumers and found that 77% hold a positive view of reusable packaging; however, only 30% have a clear understanding of what reusable packaging means. This highlights the first challenge for brand owners: how to efficiently explain to consumers how the reuse system works while also addressing their priorities. Consumers rightly prioritize their health, questioning the hygiene and safety of reusable containers, particularly in the cases of food. Our survey showed that 78% of consumers raise this issue, making it one of the most common obstacles to adoption.
