Many CGF members, governments and civil society stakeholders already realise the value of third party certification in expanding consumer markets for sustainable products, and in achieving corporate deforestation-free supply chain commitments.

An inclusive and consistent approach to procuring certified forest products is a key tool for CGF members to manage deforestation risks and meet corporate performance targets on climate and carbon.

Forest certification is a key tool for a forest positive future
When fully implemented by consumer facing manufacturers and retailers, forest certification provides many scale-up (within multiple supply chains), scale-out (across landscapes), stakeholder engagement and consumer trust building opportunities for a forest positive future.

Driving global availability of certified forest products
PEFC is the world’s largest forest certification system, with 75% of all certified forests globally (319 million hectares) under PEFC certification. This means certified wood and paper-based solutions, especially consumer product packaging, are readily available across most key geographic markets.

PEFC-certified forests are estimated to absorb 315 million of CO2 every year – equivalent to roughly 30% of annual emissions from the global fashion industry or 85% of the UK’s emissions in 2018.

Restaurant Patrons Willing to Pay More for Sustainable Packaging, Says New Asia Pulp & Paper Survey

Customers of fast-casual restaurants increasingly value corporate sustainability practices according to a new study released by Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), the 2018 Paper & Packaging Consumer Trends Report. More than half of consumers (55 percent) are willing to pay more for fast food products packaged in sustainable materials, with 35 percent agreeing they would pay up to 10 percent more. Moreover, compared to five years ago, the sustainability of food packaging is more important to nearly two in three Americans today (65 percent), holding especially true among Baby Boomers (67 percent) and Millennials (66 percent). “Consumers demand smarter packaging that serves both quality and sustainability functions, so it is crucial for the food industry to adopt recyclable and naturally compostable solutions and phase out disposable food packaging like plastics and polystyrene,” said Ian Lifshitz, vice president of sustainability and stakeholder relations, APP. “As brands,they also have the opportunity to win over consumers who choose companies that place sustainability at the heart of their business.” Click read more below for additional detail.

Two Sides Member Spotlight: Rolland Enterprises inc.

This month’s Member Spotlight features Rolland Enterprises Inc. A leading North American producer of uncoated papers, Rolland manufactures papers with up to 100% post-consumer content. With operations in Quebec and Wisconsin, the company’s operations include a paper mill and converting facility, as well as two state-of-the-art facilities that produce premium recycled pulp. Founded in 1882, Rolland’s enduring commitment to quality, innovation and sustainable manufacturing include sustainable sourcing, energy efficiency, water conservation, wastewater treatment technology, recycling of process byproducts and a continuing focus on further reducing its environmental footprint. Rolland uses the life cycle assessment (LCA) process to guide its sustainability improvement objectives and makes the results of its LCAs public, confirming the company’s environmental stewardship to its many stakeholders. For example, an LCA identified a gap in the company’s water consumption which enabled it to improve its water recycling systems. Today, Rolland’s paper mill has a closed-loop system that uses six times less water and recycles the water 30 times. One of the company’s most successful environmental innovations is the use of 93% renewable biogas energy to manufacture products at its paper mill — the only mill in North America to use primarily biogas for energy. An eight-mile-long pipeline feeds the mill with purified methane gas captured at a nearby landfill. This reduces Rolland’s annual CO2 footprint by 70,000 tons or the equivalent of taking 23,400 compact cars off the road for one year.
