Four organizations join as PEFC International Stakeholder members

“We are delighted to welcome AEBIOM, CEETTAR, CNVP and WestRock Company as International Stakeholder members,” said Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International, following the acceptance of the four new members.

“By becoming members, these organizations help and support us in our vital work to ensure the sustainable management of the world’s forests.”

The new members
Connecting Natural Values and People (CNVP) is an international organization with expertise in forestry and rural development, focused specifically on the Balkans. With operations in Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro, CNVP provides advisory services in forestry, rural development, environment and biomass for renewable energy, with the aim of improving livelihoods of rural people. We have been working with CNVP for several years on the development of a national forest certification system in Macedonia.

The European Biomass Association (AEBIOM) is the common voice of the bioenergy sector, aiming to develop a sustainable bioenergy market based on fair business conditions. As an international nonprofit organization, AEBIOM brings together 29 national associations and around 90 companies from all over Europe. AEBIOM holds a strong position representing all bioenergy sectors and has a unique possibility to influence European policies, communications and various other EU papers.

The European Confederation of Agricultural, Rural and Forestry Contractors (CEETTAR) represents around 150,000 companies and nearly 600,000 workers, with the aim of representing the interests of these land-based contractors in Europe. In 2014, CEETTAR merged with former International Stakeholder member European Network of Forestry Entrepreneurs (ENFE), resulting in a stronger and more representative single organization representing land-based contractors at EU level.

WestRock Company is a leading global packaging company, providing paper and packaging solutions in consumer and corrugated markets. WestRock Company was formed in 2015 through the merger of previous PEFC International Stakeholder member MeadWestvaco and RockTenn. WestRock’s 42,000 team members support customers around the world from around 275 operating and business locations spanning North and South America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.

With these four new members, we now count 26 International Stakeholder members, as well as 43 national members.

Controlled wood (CW) requirements explicitly require an assessment of whether a country’s forest sector is associated with armed violent conflict as listed in Indicator 2.1 of CW category 2 of FSC-PRO-002a: “2.1. The forest sector is not associated with violent armed conflict, including that which threatens national or regional security and/or is linked to military control.“ FSC concluded that a strong association between the forest sector and government exists in Russia and Belarus. Combined with their government’s military action, ‘specified risk’ had to be concluded. FSC further concluded that this risk cannot be mitigated by any other control measure except to altogether avoid source material from these areas. To implement this credibly in the FSC system, shorter timelines were required in addition to providing a mandate for FSC International to make changes to such risk assessments and control measures directly.

PEFC joins the UNFCCC Fashion for Global Climate Action initiative

The Fashion for Global Climate Action initiative calls on the fashion industry to acknowledge the contribution of the sector to climate change and our shared responsibility to strive towards climate neutrality for a safer planet. Through collective action and bold leadership, we have the power to make this fast and drastic transformation. By signing the Charter, PEFC demonstrates our commitment to playing our part to ensure the fashion sector is on the path to a low-carbon future. We express our intent to support implementation of the principles enshrined in the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action in accordance with our mandates and to work collaboratively with our peers and relevant stakeholders to develop, implement and enhance the climate action agenda in fashion.

Paperboard is Replacing Plastic to Reduce Climate Impact

A number of global companies have replaced or are doing trials to replace the material in their gift cards – from plastic to paperboard. Sweden’s largest cinema chain, SF Bio, has taken the plunge and is now replacing all its cards. “When our card supplier, Megacard, suggested we could make our gift cards from paperboard and thereby drastically reduce their environmental impact, it was self-evident to us to switch,” explains Anna Marcusson, product manager for gift cards at SF Bio. “In plain language, it means we’re phasing out the use of 10 tonnes of PVC a year by phasing out the plastic and replacing it with cards made of Invercote from Iggesund Paperboard,” she continues.
