Help FSC streamline its standard setting processes by contributing to our second public consultation

FSC-PRO-01-001 The Development and Revision of FSC® Requirements provides the process steps for how to develop, review, revise, and withdraw international FSC requirements. FSC invites you to participate in the second public consultation of the procedure from 29 April – 30 June 2022 via the FSC Consultation Platform.

Our normative framework (policies, standards, procedures, among other documents) is the backbone of how we protect and manage forests worldwide. International FSC requirements are produced following the steps set out in FSC-PRO-01-001.

Revising this procedure is thus key in streamlining FSC’s normative framework to produce adaptive and user-friendly documents and continue effectively delivering on the FSC mission. Streamlining the FSC normative framework is a key goal in the FSC Global Strategy and we are looking for feedback from stakeholders to support this effort.

Key stakeholders for this consultation are FSC members, Network Partners/Regional Offices and FSC staff; but all input from any stakeholder group is welcome.

The procedure touches on governance topics, as it defines who takes decisions during the standard setting process. It also includes requirements for engaging members and stakeholders, how working groups operate and provisions for testing of requirements.

PEFC turns 20!

2019 is a very special year for the PEFC family as together we celebrate our 20th anniversary. Before the birth of PEFC, forest certification was designed primarily for large-scale forest owners, managing huge areas of land and able to shoulder the burden of certification. But this meant the millions of small-, family and community forest owners were shut out, unable to afford a certification that was not created for them. It was back in 1999 when European small-forest owners came together to create an international forest certification system that had their needs at heart. On 30 June 1999, PEFC was created! “Having no certification system suitable for smallholders was a serious issue back in the 90s,” said Ben Gunneberg, the CEO of PEFC International since the very beginning. “Not only for the many small-forest owners that could not benefit from certification, but also for the world.” Click read more below for additional detail.

FSC Controlled Wood Standard Approved and Published

On 11 November 2015 in Helsinki, Finland, the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Board of Directors approved the Requirements for Sourcing FSC Controlled Wood (FSC-STD-40-005 V3-0). The standard has now been published on the FSC International website, and it is planned that it will enter into force on 1 July 2016. The approved standard – which can be downloaded here – outlines the requirements for organizations with an FSC chain of custody certificate to implement a due diligence system to avoid material from unacceptable sources which cannot be used in FSC Mix products. Unacceptable sources are the five categories of controlled wood, which are defined in the standard.
