International Paper Wins 2017 AF&PA Sustainability Award for Sustainable Forest Management

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) recognized International Paper with the 2017 AF&PA Leadership in Sustainability Award for Sustainable Forest Management for their Certified Forest Management LLC program. The award was presented at AF&PA’s annual meeting on Friday, Nov. 3 in Greensboro, Georgia.

“International Paper took the initiative to increase and expand its certified fiber supply by supporting small private landowners – benefitting its customers, its suppliers and its businesses,” said AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman.

International Paper created a cost-effective means for small private landowners to become Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified following customer demand for certified products. Through Certified Forest Management LLC, its own FSC forest management group, International Paper has directly enrolled and actively maintained FSC forest management certification for 210 private landowners in ten states since 2012, significantly increasing certified forestlands and their certified fiber supply in the process.

“We thank AF&PA for recognizing International Paper’s Certified Forest Management LLC,” said International Paper Chairman and CEO Mark Sutton. “Through this initiative, we are able to support private landowners as we continue to lead the world in responsible forest stewardship to ensure healthy and productive ecosystems for generations to come.”

Promising field runs with the Centipede forest machine on SCA land

For a few weeks, SCA has been test-driving the Centipede concept machine, which Komatsu and eight Swedish forestry companies are jointly developing. The machine is seen as the sustainable forest machine of the future and combines lower soil compaction, increased productivity and better work environment. “There are many possibilities with the machine”, says Thomas Persson, business developer at SCA Skog and one of two test drivers. The work to develop the Centipede machine is one of forestry's most important development projects where the issue of sustainability is central. The machine is intended to be able to meet the climate of the future and the challenges arising from increasingly shorter periods of frozen grounds.
