Klabin announces forest management plan for Angatuba and region

Klabin has published the Public Summaryof the 2017 Forestry Management Planforits forestry operations in the region of Angatuba in the interior of São Paulo state. The Summary outlines the company’s efforts to promote adequate management of its forests, the indicators of its social and environmental actions and investments made in line with its Sustainability Policy.

One of the highlights in the period was the inauguration of the Rolim Rosa Community Center in Angatuba. The Community Center will host educational and cultural activities, music and dance workshops, as well as cooking and fitness classes.  Developed and executed by Klabin as social compensation for the city, the project benefits over two thousand residents of Jardim Elisa Volpi and Residencial Vital Rolim Rosa.

Besides highlighting the external commitments undertaken by the company, the document provides details on the company’s forest areas in the state of São Paulo with geoclimatic, topographic, geological and hydrological data, the forest stewardship process, including the diverse areas and operations such as research, planning, forestry, harvesting and forestry transportation.

Forest Stewardship Standards for Thailand developed

Two new standards for Forest Stewardship for the Kingdom of Thailand have been developed and approved for publication. Specifically, a standard for all forest types and scales (except Management Units smaller than 20 ha) and a complementary, locally adapted regional standard for smallholders with Management Units smaller than 20 ha have been developed. Both standards apply to private and state-owned forests with timber and non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in the scope. The locally adapted regional standard is part of a wider pilot. It currently focuses on forest plantations, but its extension to natural forests may be considered in the future. FSC Forest Stewardship Standards (FSS) are based on the Principles and Criteria for Forest Stewardship; the foundation of FSC certification schemes covering a broad range of issues, from maintaining high conservation value to community relations and workers’ rights, as well as monitoring the environmental and social impacts of forest management.

Illegal logging: A challenge and opportunity for FSC

Illegal logging and the international trade in illicitly harvested timber is a serious crime estimated to account for 15-30% of all timber traded1. It is most prevalent and persistent in tropical forest areas worldwide. Illegal logging undermines the legal trade in forest products by depressing prices, contributes to national and global insecurity by spreading corruption and funding militias, affects the health, safety, and livelihoods of communities, and is responsible for deforestation, habitat loss, species extinction, contributions to global warming. Public consultations – Shape the FSC system!

The documents and changes being consulted on are: **Standard to define small and low-intensity forests to now include community forest FSC-STD-01-003 SLIMF & Community Forest Eligibility Criteria sets a generic threshold and definition for ‘SLIMF’ and ‘community forest.’ SLIMF and community forest thresholds are then able to be adapted to the national context. The main changes being consulted on include: *New definition for ‘community forest’ *Adding flexibility to national standard developers, even allowing for the threshold for SLIMF to be over 1000 hectares once there is justification in addition to stakeholder support provided.
