New investigation into certified takeaway food container supply chains

FSC and its assurance partner, Assurance Services International (ASI) are launching a new transaction verification (TV) loop on FSC-certified takeaway food containers. This TV loop will investigate the supply chain of paper-based takeaway food containers from producer markets in Asia to consumer markets in America, Europe, and Oceania, covering 28 countries. This is the first TV loop on FSC-certified paper products.

There is an increasing demand for fibre-based disposable packaging and wooden cutlery in the food industry across the world. Over the past three years, ASI has found evidence of potential prevalence of fraudulent manufacturing and trade of paper-based dinnerware coming from China. FSC analysed the information about potential false claims and took action by blocking Ningbo Yinzhou Happy Paper Products and Ningbo Yinzhou Yongshun Foreign Trade from the FSC system for making false claims.

FSC and ASI are addressing these risks to the integrity of certified takeaway food container supply chains by examining transaction data from 710 certificate holders who trade in materials and products related to paper-based food containers. These certificate holders will submit records of transactions that took place between 1 July 2024 and 31 December 2024.

UPM participates in eDNA project – biodiversity research is developed for Nordic species

UPM is participating in the NorthDIVeRSITY project led by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), which is developing eDNA (Environmental DNA) tools for monitoring fish and forest species suitable for the Nordic nature. The project aims to find more effective methods for monitoring the effects of restoration, for example, by studying species distribution before and after restoration. "New methods for assessing environmental biodiversity are needed to complement traditional ones. eDNA is a promising alternative for monitoring fisheries, for example, but its performance in northern conditions needs further development," says Pauliina Louhi, Senior Researcher at Luke. One of the project's research sites is located in the Kelvänjoki river and its catchment area in Lieksa, North Karelia. Kelvänjoki flows into the Pielinen river. In the summer of 2024, the old mill dam on the Ala-Kelvänjoki river was dismantled and the rapids were restored. UPM's stream water program was one of the funders of the restoration site. Different kinds of samples were taken from the water body before the restoration started, and monitoring will continue in the coming years.

Stora Enso invests EUR 94 million to grow in renewable materials

Stora Enso will invest EUR 94 million to grow in renewable materials and to increase competitiveness in consumer board and biomaterials. EUR 52 million will be invested to increase the dissolving pulp production capacity at Enocell Mill and EUR 42 million to enhance the availability of the chemi-thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) at Imatra Mills. Both mills are located in Finland. Enocell Mill, part of the Biomaterials division, will be converted to focus entirely on production of dissolving pulp. The softwood pulp production will be gradually discontinued after the investment. The mill will have a total capacity of 430 000 tonnes dissolving pulp annually, whereof 185 000 tonnes hardwood and 245 000 tonnes softwood dissolving pulp. The investment is scheduled to be completed during the second half of 2019. It is expected to exceed the Biomaterials division’s profitability target, operational return on operating capital (ROOC) of 15%, and to have a positive impact on sales. The investment at Imatra Mills, part of the Consumer Board division, includes a new CTMP drying and re-pulping plant as well as extension of the pulp warehouse. This aims to enhance the availability of CTMP and to drive the commercialisation of micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC). Due to its high strength and 100% renewable raw materials, MFC is designed to outperform fossil-based materials, such as plastics, in a variety of applications. The project is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2019. The investment is expected to exceed the Consumer Board division’s profitability target, operational return on operating capital (ROOC) of 20%, and to have a marginal impact on sales.
