The Consumer Goods Forum’s Forest Positive Coalition released their Pulp, Paper and Fibre-based Packaging (PPP) Roadmap earlier this year. The document aims to guide Coalition members in their efforts to remove deforestation and conversion from PPP supply chains.

Certification will continue to play an important role in the Coalition’s push to tackle deforestation, forest conversion and degradation, as well as traceability of materials and improved management of forests, and to ensure all stakeholders with an interest in the forest are involved in its management.

We will be joined by an expert panel to discuss the Roadmap ambition and KPIs, how PEFC traceability certification requirements are aligned with the guidelines, and how those are audited on the ground.

Stewart Begg, Global Sourcing Director Sustainable Fibre at Essity, also co-chair of and representing the CGF Forest Positive Coalition PPP working group, will introduce the roadmap, highlighting its ambition, priorities and KPIs that they are recommending to their members. This member driven roadmap underlines the importance of transparency and collective actions.

Marta Martinez Pardo, Technical Manager at PEFC International, will focus on traceability and how PEFC certification can help companies meet the Roadmap KPIs. She’ll explain what PEFC chain of custody certification requires of suppliers and buyers, and present an overview of the management system requirements.

Finally, Rob Shaw, Technical Manager, Forestry and Chain of Custody from Soil Association will provide a certification body’s point of view, explaining their role in third party certification. He’ll explain how certification audits work on the ground, before looking at the opportunities for improvement in traceability.

German system and Malaysian Forest Plantation Standard achieve PEFC re-endorsement

Germany has become the second country to successfully achieve PEFC re-endorsement of its national forest certification system for a third time. The Malaysian Criteria and Indicators (MC&I) for Forest Plantations standard has also received PEFC re-endorsement. This endorsement not only confirms that they continue to meet PEFC’s globally recognized Sustainability Benchmarks, but also ensures that certified forest owners and companies in these countries continue to benefit from the global acceptance of PEFC. The Malaysian Criteria and Indicators (MC&I) for Forest Plantations is a complementary standard to the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS), which includes the MC&I for Natural Forests. The endorsement of this second edition of the MC&I for Forest Plantations, which is designed to assess the management practices for, and enable the certification of, forest plantations, follows the re-endorsement of the MTCS in 2014. “These re-endorsements show both the commitment of our members and underlines PEFC's leadership in the continuous improvement of forest certification," said Ben Gunneberg, CEO of PEFC International. “We appreciate their continued commitment, as well as the contributions of all the stakeholders who have participated in the standards revision and assessment processes.”

Can Sustainability ROI Boost the Bottom Line?

By giving economic value to forests, we can enhance our sustainability efforts as well as our business. That was Domtar CEO John D. At the event, Emily Chasan, sustainable finance editor at Bloomberg News, asked Williams several questions about how companies can identify, track and monetize sustainability returns driven by innovation, operational efficiency, employee engagement, brand enhancement and risk mitigation, and how those efforts can lead to better decision-making by the C-suite and investors. U.K. Recycle Week 2022: A Celebration of Recycling

WRAP, a climate action NGO based in the U.K., is organizing Recycle Week from October 17-23 to celebrate consumer recycling of everyday goods across the U.K. The annual event encourages retailers, brand owners, waste management companies, trade associations, governments and the media to come together to achieve a common goal: “to galvanize the public into recycling more of the right things, more often.” In 2021, the campaign achieved over 29 million digital impressions, with 82% of people commenting that they changed their behavior after seeing Recycle Week 2021 content. For 2022, the campaign’s theme is called ‘Let’s Get Real,’ and its objective is to debunk myths surrounding recycling, challenge perceptions and improve behavior.
