Smurfit Kappa announced delivery of its 150th automatic web filling line for the liquid and semi-liquid industry

Used for filling Bag-in-Box® and Pouch-Up® products, the machine was produced by the BIB Equipment division of Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box.

Smurfit Kappa’s automatic web filling machines offer high productivity and efficiency thanks to a number of innovative technologies including:

• The revolutionary filling valve with separate vacuum and nitrogen circuits which decrease the oxygen pickup during filling
• The “soft drop” of the bag reducing the number of leakers
•  The raised buffer tank which enables a better flow and more accurate filling

The web filling machines also meet strictest standards in terms of HACCP health and safety requirements.

For over 20 years, BIB Equipment has been producing automatic web filling lines for the liquid and semi-liquid industry in Europe, Russia, Latin America, North America and Asia Pacific.

This accomplishment is the result of Smurfit Kappa’s experience and expertise in the end-to-end process of packaging liquids. In close collaboration with R&D and Quality departments, the BIB Equipment department carries out a lengthy process to serve each project from the evaluation of the specific needs of each customer to the construction, testing, installation and after-sales service.

Smurfit Kappa invests in circular approach to significantly reduce CO2 emissions

Smurfit Kappa has completed a large-scale sustainability project at its Zülpich paper mill in Germany, which significantly reduces the plant’s CO2 emissions. The €11.5 million investment included a major redesign of the plant’s multi-fuel boiler to provide a more sustainable fuel source for the generation of steam and electricity. The mill, which produces approximately 500,000 tonnes of paper annually, is now powered by a combination of its own biogas, which is a by-product of its circular water treatment plant, natural gas, and the residual materials or so-called ‘rejects’ which occur in the paper recycling process that would otherwise be considered waste. The project reduces CO2 emissions at the Zülpich paper mill by more than 25% and saves 55,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, which represents a 2% reduction in Smurfit Kappa’s global CO2 emissions. Smurfit Kappa has the goal of achieving a 55% intensity reduction in fossil CO2 emissions by 2030 and at least net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. The packaging leader has also had its 2030 emissions reductions targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative as being in-line with the Paris agreement.

Atlantic Packaging Installs Wide Format Printer and Die Cutter

Atlantic Printing & Graphics has a legacy of meeting our customers needs and growing right alongside them. As our customers’ product lines gain in popularity, we’ve been able to expand our capacity to stay right in step with them. Our latest example of this commitment is the installation of new KBA Wide Format Printer and Bobst Die Cutter. We’ve always operated on a traditional printing press format – 28 x 40 – but we saw an opportunity this past year to branch out and enter new markets. With the KBA 6 color printer, we can print 47.25 x 63.50. This is significantly larger and gives us a whole new capacity and output. We installed the Bobst Die Cutter to support the materials we’re creating on the KBA printer. These pieces of equipment together are incredible and put Atlantic Printing & Graphics in a whole new playing field. We are set up to service and support our current and new large customers with their needs for printing, folding cartons, and much more.
