Successful start-up of cutting-edge paper machine Grupo Gondi PM 7 in Mexico

At the beginning of January, the PM 7 of Grupo Gondi, one of Mexico’s largest paper manufactures, was successfully commissioned at the new Papel y Empaques mill in Monterrey. The paper machine is set to produce 400,000 tons of high-performance light weight recycled containerboard annually with Voith’s leading technology.

Eduardo Posada, CEO of Grupo Gondi, says: “The plant is one of the most modern recycling board mills in Latin America. The start-up of PM 7 is an important step for us. Together with Voith, we will continue our efforts to increase our market position for high-performance lightweight recycled containerboard in Mexico and Latin America with innovative production solutions.”

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Voith was able to hand over the line to Grupo Gondi to its satisfaction. “We were only able to achieve this because of the successful cooperation of the entire team and the trusting partnership between Voith and Grupo Gondi,” says Christian Deide, Project Manager Voith Paper. “With the PM 7, Voith contributes to Latin America’s sustainable paper production.”

As a full-line supplier, Voith supplied the entire production line, including the BlueLine stock preparation line with conveying and reject handling, the XcelLine paper machine, as well as the MCS, DCS and QCS automation solutions. The XcelLine paper machine, with a working width of 6,600 mm at the reel and a design speed of 1,200 m/min, produces testliner and corrugating medium with basis weights in the range of 90 to 250 g/m2.

Sonoco Agrees to Acquire Ball Metalpack

Sonoco announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Ball Metalpack, a leading manufacturer of sustainable metal packaging for food and household products and the largest aerosol producer in North America, for $1.35 billion in cash before taking into consideration tax benefits with an estimated net present value of approximately $180 million. Ball Metalpack is a joint venture owned by Platinum Equity (51 percent) and Ball Corporation (NYSE: BLL) (49 percent). Previously part of Ball Corporation, Ball Metalpack, headquartered in Broomfield, Colorado, was formed in 2018 and has more than 100 years of experience in producing steel tinplate food and aerosol cans, as well as closures and packaging components from eight operations in Canton and Columbus, Ohio; Milwaukee and Deforest, Wisconsin; Chestnut Hill, Tennessee; Horsham, Pennsylvania; and Oakdale, California. Ball Metalpack is projected to generate approximately $850 million in revenue and $111 million of adjusted EBITDA in 2021.

Sigma Stretch Film invests in new capacity in Ontario (canplastics.com)

Blown and cast film maker Sigma Stretch Film, a division of Sigma Plastics Group with operations in Ontario, is boosting its production capacity by 30 million pounds through two new Davis-Standard equipment installations. Sigma’s plant in Belleville, Ont., will receive a Davis-Standard seven-layer agricultural stretch film line aimed at expanding the current silage film offerings. According to Sigma officials, the new line allows production using the latest resins, expanded exploration in sustainability options, and better service for both domestic and international agricultural customers. The new line adds fifteen million pounds of silage film capacity in Belleville. The second machine is a three-layer Davis-Standard blown film line for Sigma’s Shelbyville, Kentucky location. “Supporting the ever-growing demand for prestretched hand films and the Vortex product lines, this equipment will add fifteen million pounds of capacity,” Sigma officials said.
