Total U.S. Printing-Writing Paper Shipments Essentially Flat in April 2022

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its April 2022 Printing-Writing Monthly report. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments remained essentially flat (+0.3 percent) in April compared to April 2021.

Total printing-writing paper inventory levels increased one percent when compared to March 2022.

U.S. purchases of uncoated free sheet (UFS) papers in April increased one percent compared to last April while the inventory level increased one percent compared to March 2022. UFS imports increased 12 percent while exports decreased 26 percent in March 2022.

Coated free sheet (CFS) paper shipments increased five percent compared to April 2021 while the inventory level increased two percent compared to March 2022. CFS imports increased 16 percent while exports decreased ten percent in March 2022.

U.S. purchases of coated mechanical (CM) papers in April decreased 21 percent compared to last April while the inventory level increased six percent compared to March 2022. CM imports and exports both decreased compared to March 2021, down 21 percent and nine percent respectively.

Uncoated mechanical (UM) paper shipments increased 15 percent compared to April 2021 while the inventory level increased one percent compared to March 2022. UM imports increased 13 percent while exports remained essentially flat (-0.1 percent) in March 2022.

Norske Skog: Continued growth in challenging containerboard markets

Norske Skog’s EBITDA in the third quarter of 2023 was NOK 327 million, a decrease from NOK 380 million in the second quarter of 2023. The main driver for the lower third quarter EBITDA was lower publication paper sales prices. The cash flow from operations in the quarter was NOK 173 million. Deliveries of packaging paper increased according to ramp-up plans, and Norske Skog Bruck received favourable quality feedback from customers. Operating earnings in the third quarter of 2023 were NOK 36 million compared to operating earnings in the second quarter of 2023 of NOK 146 million.

Georgia-Pacific to Modernize Pineland, Texas Lumber Complex with $120 Million Investment

Georgia-Pacific announced that it is modernizing one of its premier sawmills in its Pineland, Texas lumber complex with a $120 million investment. Construction is expected to begin early next year and is scheduled to be completed in late 2022. The Pineland Lumber Complex was built in the 1910s and is the largest business in Sabine County, where Pineland, Texas, sits. The investment should increase the mills’ overall production. The modifications include a new sawmill which will replace the existing stud mill that was built in the 1960s. The new mill will have the ability to produce 450 million board feet of dimensional lumber each year once operational and running at full capacity, compared to the 380 million it can currently produce. It should also increase the number of trucks delivering the wood from 250 to 300 loads each day.

UPM Raflatac plans to open a new state-of-the-art slitting and distribution terminal in the Toronto, Canada metropolitan area. The new facility will improve service and quality to UPM Raflatac’s customers in Eastern Canada and Northeastern U.S., while strengthening relationships in the region. “We have made significant investments in our production capabilities to meet the demand for self-adhesive paper and film products.
